Every Baltimore police officer to get a BlackBerry

Baltimore’s police department will become one of the first agencies in the nation to issue every patrol officer a BlackBerry that allows for instant warrant checks, city officials said Wednesday.

The city’s Board of Estimates approved using $5.3 million in federal stimulus money for the police department, including $3.5 million to buy 2,000 of the BlackBerries, known as “Pocket Cops.”

The devices allow officers to run warrants, check vehicle registrations and pull up criminal histories and photos of suspects. Officers who use them can be more efficient and spend more time outside of their cars, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III has emphasized the need for officers to walk foot patrols and get to know residents.

Police have already tried out the devices in the city’s western district through a pilot program, and early reviews were positive. Officers using Pocket Cops made twice as many arrests over a 3-month period than those equipped with radios or laptops, according to statistics provided by Mayor Sheila Dixon’s office. They also hauled in more offenders on outstanding warrants.

The devices could also save the city money. It costs about $1,700 to purchase a BlackBerry with a year’s service plan, compared with $7,800 to install a laptop and software in a police car, said Scott Peterson, a spokesman for the mayor.

Baltimore remains one of the nation’s most violent big cities despite a 20-year low in homicides last year, and many neighborhoods are plagued by widespread poverty and an entrenched drug trade. Earlier this summer, 12 people were shot at a cookout in an attack that police believe targeted a major drug dealer.

Those devices will only contribute to 17s if they are given to patrol. However, Blackberrys would be useful for the administrative personnel to better conduct business.

Hey Admin Boy, I heard the Verizon or Metro PCS will give you a great deal when you turn in your dept. issued blackberry come November. You'll need something to use when the dispatcher tells you to call the Cmp. Sgt. while arriving on that 332. Be sure to tell Sgt. Mayree Coffeemaker also.

I say this would be helpful for those who doesn't have laptops! Easier to run a suspect information instead switching to another channel and being in queue.

There's no way I will ever go to Patrol again. If Exposito gets in I'm out of here. Good riddance, see ya. However, If Trooper Joe pulls an upset I will remain here for 3 or 4 years and will make it my mission to find out all the names of those who have gotten on this site and bad-mouthed the current administration.
