A grandmother, her son and grandson owe a lot to a passing Sheriff's deputy who in the pre-dawn pouring rain spotted smoke and tracked it down to their rural home west of Palm Beach Gardens. He pounded on the door, as their garage went up in flames, waking them and getting them out of the house unharmed, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Don DeLucia said. It was about 4:27 a.m.

The fire jumped from garage to the wood-frame house at 13622 Mallard Way west of Palm Beach Gardens. All that was left of the home as the sun came up is some walls and charred framing.

Not long after they got out, the fire jumped from garage to the wood-frame house, DeLucia said. All that's left of the home as the sun comes up at 13622 Mallard Way is some walls and charred framing.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy Stephen Miller rescued Ann Cochran, 71, her 45-year-old son Ray Cochran and grandson Brian Bristow, 20. But in addition to the home and the garage, the fire did claim an RV, a truck and a car on the property. The family told fire officials it will be staying with friends now that their home is in ruins.

The home was 26 years ago by Ann's husband Don, who died a month ago, said her granddaughter Stephanie Serafin, who came from her home in Tequesta to survey the damage later in the morning. The couple had been married 57 years, she said."We spent a lot of wonderful holidays here. There are lots of great memories," Serafin said.

The home sits in a neighborhood void of fire hydrants, leaving the multiple rescue crews to tap a pond on the property for water, DeLucia said.Investigators on the scene are looking to two possible sources for the fire: lightning from the overnight storms or possibly a discarded cigarette butt.

What about the 2 man in 2 man out rule for PBCFR?

Another great example of how valuable patrol is. Great job!

After speaking with people on scene and speaking with a supervisor, the supervisor acted like he did not know what an outstanding job D/S Miller had done. I did up a memo and sent it through the chain for a life saving award. If this isn't worthy I don't know what is.....................................
