Check out this article about Tampa PD from the ST Pete Times. They also have budget woes, but they aren't cutting cops. They are cutting non-sworn. Why do we have to cut 44 deputies---TPD has proven that they can still stay afloat WITHOUT COPS BEING LAID OFF!!!!

TAMPA — Police officials said Wednesday they're cutting 36 civilian jobs to trim their 2010 budget by $1.85 million.

Four employees were told their last day would be in 90 days, while 29 others will get one-year contract extensions, paid for with federal grant money, said Assistant Chief Bob Guidara. After that, only stimulus money or another federal grant would allow the city to keep them.

Also three vacant posts — a crime scene technician, a data terminal operator and a training specialist — were eliminated.

"We don't anticipate any other personnel reductions for 2010," Guidara said.

The grant will pay 11 investigative assistants, 10 police community service and eight public service officers for the fiscal year of 2010.

Guidara said although the department doesn't currently have a savings target, management is exploring a litany of ways to be more efficient. Cost-cutting ideas include reducing aviation patrol hours, standardizing uniforms and eliminating uniforms for support employees, and buying office supplies in bulk.

With government budgets shrinking, "it's absolutely essential that we make the adjustments maintain the highest level of public safety," he explained.

****The Chief of Police deserves a big pat on the back for doing the right thing. Will Sheriff Nugent do the same??? :?:

Nope, in our agency the civillions far out rank any sworn positions. This is evidenced all around. From Comm. center to forensics. You see where their loyalties lie. Bottom line, you can recruit new deputies all day long, but you can't recruit and retrain qualified civillians. That's their mentality. I believe you will see the opposite. The civillianization of many of the formerly sworn positions, like DARE, GREAT, Training etc. Your already seeing it in the courthouse.

GET READY!!! This administration only thinks of themselves.

Good! Maybe there is hope for some deputies then. I hope you don't beat your wife either. Stay away from those rowdy folks who party hardy at each others houses. Can you find out the truth about Jeff? Nobody believes what has been said about that incident, nobody! Including me.

Truth Speaker! Ha ha... funniest thing I've read in a long time. If there is one absolute constant on these message boards, it's that the majority of the posters - those complaining - would not dare let the truth get in the way of a good rumor or zinger. The truth is the last thing most of you want to hear. If you actually took the time to seek out the truth, you wouldn't be whining on here all the time, you'd actually be part of the solution.

Taking shots at fellow co-workers is about as juvenile as it gets. Implying, no, saying, that civilians are more expendable than sworn just advertises the very reason why you post your complaints on here - because that is a moronic perspective. It's not about sworn vs. civilian, it's about making the smartest cuts as an agency. Nobody wants to lose their job, and guess what, the Sheriff managed to get us through the toughest budget process in our careers without laying off a single person. That is the truth, even though I know it doesn't exactly help your zingers gain traction.

I was a civilian in this agency before I became sworn, and you know what, I'm not a different person because I now raised my right hand and was sworn-in. I was also a civilian from the day I was born, and so were my parents and my grandparents. I would even bet that someone in your family is a civilian - do they know that you think they are less worthy than you are because you carry a gun?

You embarass us all when you display your lack of intellect and reason. Hey, since you like the way Tampa PD does it, how about you apply there? I can promise you that I will wish you luck and hope you get the job. And when the City Manager changes there, and the Police Chief changes, I hope it all continues to work exactly the way you think it should.
