DEERFIELD BEACH - The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating a crash between a sheriff's deputy and a school bus that sent the deputy and two children to the hospital.

The extent of the injuries from Thursday afternoon's accident was not immediately available, but the three were taken to North Broward Medical Center, authorities said.

The crash happened at the intersection of Southwest 10th Street and Sixth Avenue about 2:25 p.m.

The school bus was carrying eight children from Westglades Middle School in Parkland.

Four students -- two boys and two girls -- filed out of the bus and were picked up by another school bus at 3:20 p.m. to be taken to their drop-off sites. Two other students were picked up by their parents.

Vincent Alessi, principal of Deerfield Beach Middle School, rode his motorcycle to the accident scene to check on the children even though they were not from his school.

"They seem to be OK," he said.

The deputy's cruiser's hood was almost entirely torn off in the accident. The school bus was mostly intact, with minor damage to its left rear side and its back bumper.

Eastbound traffic between FAU Research Park Boulevard/ Natura Boulevard in front of the Tivoli Park rental community to Sixth Avenue has been blocked off to traffic.

Officials said the bus was on its regular route when it crashed in Deerfield Beach, 11 miles from Westglades.

"That's its usual route. It always goes through there," said Andrew Feirstein, a Broward School District spokesman.
