Officer William Greene submitted a letter of resignation to the Madison Police Department yesterday Wednesday, November 12th.

A letter from Police Chief Rick Davis says, the department responded as quickly as possible and followed protocol set out in the Florida Statues "Law Enforcement Officer's Bill of Rights".

"Law enforcement officers are empowered by their agency and by their community to enforce the laws of this state and the country. Given this authority, they are to be held to a higher standard. The officers of the Madison Police Department are also held to that same standard," says Chief Davis.

The criminal investigation is ongoing and WCTV will have more updates as soon as they are made available.

A Madison City police officer has been jailed on several charges after authorities say he had a confrontation with his ex-wife.

Officer William Greene was arrested last night after deputies say he held a gun to his ex-wife's head and threatened her.

SWAT units were called out as a precaution. Sheriff Pete Bucher said Greene was later arrested without incident and taken to the Madison County jail. He's charged with domestic violence and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

This situation has received a lot of attention on www.wctv.tv.com (http://www.wctv.tv.com) post boards (under the story). It has remained in the top 3 viewed stories for a week now. I think this is largely due to the fact that until now the citizens of Madison have not had a place for their voice to be heard without the censorship of the Greenes and their newspapers. They did cave to the public pressure and ran the story on the front page albeit it was very small and at the bottom with no mug shot and contained their usual spin. Concerning some of the posts that imply there are other officers lacking character and morals I find upsetting because they are not facing serious criminal charges. We have some really great officers and deputies here and they should not be compared to former MPD officer Greene. As for the critizism of the Greene family they have earned that over the years and if they take a moment to reflect on their own behavior and that of William Greene during this situation and others they may understand the scrutiny. As far as Chief Rick Davis I hope he has already taken time to really think about the fact that this could have ended a long time ago but not for his inability to step up and take control of the bad apple of the department.
