Probation ordered for ex-sheriff's commander accused of soliciting prostitutes

A former Orange County sheriff's commander accused of soliciting prostitutes while on duty was sentenced to probation Friday.
Steven A. Young pleaded no contest to three misdemeanor prostitution charges and was found guilty. In addition to serving a year probation, Young has to relinquish his law-enforcement certification, complete community service and cannot return to a specified area near Orange Blossom Trail that is at high risk for drugs and prostitution.
Young resigned earlier this year amid the allegations. He was accused of approaching a prostitute and paying her about $100 to have sex in his vehicle between March 31 and May 1. He was accused of approaching another prostitute May 23 and paying her $60 for oral sex.
Young joined the Sheriff's Office in 1980. Most recently, as the night watch commander, he oversaw more than 100 deputies and acted as the sheriff's spokesman for overnight breaking-news events.
