LARGO -- The man shot by a Largo police officer early this morning died at a local hospital, according to the Largo Police Department.
At about 4:20 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call complaining of a man shooting a gun outside the caller's neighbor's house in the 800 block of 14th Avenue SW. Police found the suspect, who fled on foot, at 1203 Ridge Road. A scuffle ensued when an officer tried to control the suspect, and the officer shot him.
Police said the man was taken to a local hospital, where he died later this morning. The officer was not injured.
An investigation is still underway, and police said the southbound lanes of Ridge Road will likely be closed until about 1 p.m. today. The name of the officer and the suspect have not been released. Police said the officer is on paid leave until further notice.
