View Full Version : Discipline

Many others have posted about the significant disproportionate discipline issues at VCSO. Another example that I have not yet seen here (and is often overlooked):

A deputy is disciplined for everything under the sun no matter how minor (in certain districts, but not all), but when a Sgt. clearly does something against policy, makes a mistake, bad judgment call, or orders a deputy to do the same, the Sgt is rarely disciplined (at least not in the same wasy as deputies). Deputies are clearly targeted for discipline in certain districts. Sgts do get disciplined at times, but it is usually for very serious violations that appropriately need discipline.

Usually, deputies are more than willing to admit when they make a mistake or do something wrong. It is part of being a LEO - accept responsibility and move on. However, it is inequitable for only certain deputies to be held to a certain standard or for certain minor violations to result in extreme discipline. A violation of not shining your shoes should result in the same, but minor, discipline for any deputy at any district. This is not the case. And some say it is worse in Deltona because of attempts to salvage the Deltona contract and impress the city?

It seems many supervisors strive to make as many discipline examples as possible out of trivial violations, so they don't have to perform their primary function: being a supervisor. Bottom line is that discipline is not uniform, nor proportional to violations.

Kind of like the saying of "different spanks for different ranks." Such is the life of the deputy.

So true!

I think it's mainly a Deltona thing, but I have heard of crazy stuff in other areas too. Either way doesn't make it right.

Give it a month. After the election we will be a big happy family again. We will get 10-75 back. The County Council will give us a quality raise (with no add-ons like tobacco policy and PAT). There will only be discipline in cases where it is truly warranted. The discipline will be appropriate. Deputies will be recognized for good work. Everything will be perfect again.

Yeah, right. Ben has lost his mind and taken those on the 4th floor with him. This place is in the worst condition it has ever been in!

Sounds like you are speaking from years of experience. Many of the old timers say similar things.

You should stay away from the fourth floor. It might be contagious.

It's not just the fourth floor. It includes nearly everyone above deputy.

Now there are Sgt's that conduct a traffic stop on a deputy who is responding to code 2 to a toddler bleeding from the face after being bitted by a dog. From what I am aware, the Sgt was not even listening to the radio channel the deputy was working and had no idea what type of call the deputy was going to. The sgt basically called the deputy a liar and is writing him up.

By the time the sgt was finished with the deputy, the toddler had been transported from the scene and taken to the hospital where he got something like 20+ stitches. This county was already had at least one death to an adult by a dog. There is absolutely no reason for stuff like this. It does not in ANY WAY better the deputy or the agency. This sounds like nothing more than the sgt being embarrassed because he didn't know what the deputy was doing.

THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE SAME SGT THAT HIT AND KILLED SOMEONE WHILE OUTSIDE OF HIS ZONE ABOUT AN HOUR PRIOR TO THE END OF SHIFT.

WHERE IN THE H*LL IS THE UNION FOR THIS TYPE OF BULLSH*T. WHY DOESN'T SOMEONE WITH COMMON SENSE STEP IN AND SAY THIS IS OVERKILL!!

That sounds like an absolutely crock. Hopefully the union (with the $600.00 a year in dues plus legal) will do something about that. Unbelievable (both stories...the one about a sgt doing a traffic stop and also the one about the sgt killing someone).

Who was the Sergeant? Nardiello?

Isn't this when attorney Politis is called? I understand he represents the deputies for this very reason!!

Think more along the lines of cartoon characters with Snoopy...
