OKALOOSA SHERIFF'S DEPUTY KILLED; SHOOTER ALSO DEAD

FORT WALTON BEACH - An Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office Deputy was shot and killed this morning. His shooter is also dead.

The shooter was a man deputies had picked up Monday afternoon for an involuntary examination under the Baker Act. He had been uncooperative when he was taken to the Bridgeway Center and transferred to the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center where he later escaped.

Deputies found the man and took him back to the hospital, but not before the man kicked out a patrol car window, Michele Nicholson with the Sheriff's Office said.

Early Tuesday morning, deputies learned the man had escaped again and barricaded himself in a home on Plymouth Avenue with a shotgun. The Special Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Unit tried to talk him out of the home using a bull horn because no phone was available.

"He told them he had a shot gun and he would use it," Nicholson said.

The SRT and negotiators got no further response and went into the home about 6 a.m. Tuesday. The man shot a deputy who was later pronounced dead at the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.

Deputies returned fire and the subject died at the scene.

The Sheriff's Office will hold a news conference at 1 p.m. today.

Baker Acts are worthless .... these incidents will continue I'm afraid. Rest in eternal peace, deputy, and may God somehow comfort your family, friends, and co workers during the difficult days ahead.

you are 100% correct. Baker acts are worthless. not because the treatment isnt needed, but because the people providing it are only intersted in one thing.. MONEY.. If you have insurance, you get best treatment, if not you are kicked around from place to place. anyways, when these baker acts are released early, or repeat offending criminals for that matter, we as law enforcement officers should provide public transportation for them..... but theres a catch, we should transport them to the neighborhoods of these worthless judges who order them released, or these greedy doctors and lest we forget the pos lawyers who fight to have em released, we should drop them off on the doorsteps of the above mentioned people and then sit back and watch and laugh as these people call for our help.

why am i saying this on the message board about the murdered deputy? because as stated before, it applies directly to his death. its because of the above people and the failed system that this good man was killed. if any of the above people had been killed by this same s20, it probably wouldnt have made the news.. probably because nobody wouldve cared..

REST IN PEACE BROTHER.. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN !!!
