On May 5, Trooper Walter Smith and Sgt. Stephen Coody were assisting officers from the Lake City Police Department with traffic control on US Hwy 90 when they heard a call over the radio about a bank robbery in progress at a local bank in the area. FHP immediately responded. Trooper Smith and Sgt. Coody took positions on the south and east sides of the bank. Suddenly, the suspect exited the bank and walked east into the parking lot where Trooper Smith and Sgt. Coody were armed and ready. They held the suspect at gunpoint, ordering him to lie face down on the ground while they put on the handcuffs and took him into custody.

Officer McLeod of the Lake City Police Department and Sgt. Coody later entered the bank and cleared the area, making contact with a bank employee. The employee stated that only one suspect was involved, and identified the suspect in custody as the robbery suspect. After interviewing the suspect about the crime, he confessed to two additional bank robberies he had committed outside of Florida. Great teamwork FHP!

More of us could probably do that if they would put the BOLOs out quicker than 30 minutes after the robbery. I can't remember last time we actually had an "in progress" robbery call go over the radio. Of course we had crashes to x65 anyway.

FHP mindset:
Now the Rest of the Story….Both troopers were suspended without pay for being out of their zones, pulling out their firearms, and getting involved in a situation that involved a “real” crime.

Only kidding: Great Job Guys

Yes--good work. Everytime I get involved in something the supervisor always continually asks for a 10-52 until im 98 because we have a veh vs mailbox crash holding.
