What is PBSO's definition of a career deputy?

I don't know what a text book definition would be, but it's basically for those who choose not to or are unable to advance through promotion (Sgt, Lt and so on).

The career path allows you to get what I think is a 5% raise for each step plus it gives you extra top out steps.

A deputy who is level 19, step 8 and gets "Career Deputy-1" will then become a level 25, step 6 (this gives him/her an immediate 5% raise and 2 more years to top out in paygrade before he/she hits step 10).

I'm doing this from the top of my head and I don't have our pay plan sitting in front of me, so if I made an error, someone please correct me.

There are those that like to become administrators and take the supervisory path and a career deputy would be the person that stays in operations for their career and each career step gives them a pay hike that chases but is not equal to the supervisors. Detectives in homicide, child crimes, narcotics, vehicle homicide, bomb unit are examples of a few.

No, not exactly. I work the road and I am a Career-II. You don't have to be in one of those units to be a Career Deputy. You can work in any Deputy position at PBSO and make Career Deputy.

A SGT is paygrade 39, step 1 ($69,864) through step 7 ($91,020).
A LT is paygrade 45, step 1 ($91,020) through step 4 ($103,884).

A D/S who has not gone into the career path is
paygrade 19, step 1 ($39,348) through step 10 ($58,572)
Career-I D/S is a 29-1 ($44,928) through 25-10 ($66,852)
Career-II D/S is a 31-1 ($51,300) through 31-10 ($76,296)
Career-III D/S is a 33-1 ($53,616) through 33-10 ($79,740)
Career-IV D/S is a 35-1 ($56,040) through 35-10 ($83,340)

I am a Career-II and with a little bit of OT, I made almost what a topped out Sgt would make (Base pay).

There are plenty of reasons why people choose to go into the career path.
Some love the unit they are in and know if they get promoted, they will be sent back to the road as a SGT. Some have no desire to be a supervisor and others may be trying for those stripes, but just haven't made the cut off yet. At least they are doing what they can to make the extra $$$ while they wait for the day they get that promotion.

Even if you plan to put in for Sgt, you're crazy for not applying for Career Deputy. You are NOT locked into the career path once you enter it.

I'll compare my career status combined with 10% FTO pay and 5% assignment pay combined with unlimited OT to Sgt's paygrade any day. Career Deputy Rules! Now Sgt's go and baby sit your children...

True. Not everyone wants to be a supervisor (can't say I blame them). But it is also another way to make some extra money for those who have excellent potential to become leaders fall victim to the department's politics.

What is the rule for eligibility? my understanding from the apps page is 10 years of LE experience. Yet when i question others on eligibility i'm told 6 years and 1 day and no break in service that is unless you were merged over then its only 1 year w/pbso and your granfathered into career service(go fig.). Does anyone where its in blk/wht policy/GO/ or whatever so can read the requirements for myself????
