to Donate Cruiser to Academy

BRADENTON, Florida [NMT] -- The Bradenton Police Department plans to donate a police cruiser to the Manatee Technical Institute Police Academy.

The vehicle, along with cruisers donated from other law enforcement agencies, will be used to teach police recruits driving skills, said Police Chief Michael Radzilowski.

Chief Radzilowski asked the Bradenton City Council permission to donate the vehicle, which the council granted during its meeting June 11.

Local law enforcement agencies agreed, when possible, to donate police vehicles – instead of putting them up for auction – to the MTI Police Academy.

The City’s 1999 For Crown Victoria was expected to fetch about $1,500 to $2,000 if put up for auction.

It's better to donate old police cars to the academy, than to make them spend even more to buy new ones. think about it before you open the hole that sounds come from.

Chief is out of town meeting with other Cheifs from across Florida to discuss what they are doing to reduce budget.

Rumor has it that Toke, Lewis and possibly 2 others are being given a buyout option. I guess its a take it or take it anyway offer!!

No matter how you feel about admin the city obviously is not looking out for its citizen’s when they start their cutbacks within “public safety.” If the city is rolling back to the taxes it received from 2003, lets just look at where the city has increased the most since 2003. Look at staffing: have we increased Officers? Admin? Records? Dispatch? Nope, no increase in staffing at the PD, but how about city hall? Big fat increase over there!

What kind of joke is our agency to eliminate 2 Major positions? They have already eliminated the DC’s job a few years ago. Would the fire department just wipe out there DC spots, don’t think so? This is a real joke of an agency if the Mayor allows this to happen to our agency. So we go from Captains to Chief in our chain. Ever hear of any other agency cutting public safety first and saving city hall jobs. Unreal!

Obviously not allot of thought went into this statement. How can anyone think the City is going to eliminate to top managers due to budget issues, and then make four promotions to take up the workload? There is no savings to the budget if you make promotions. If the City eliminates the Major’s No Promotions will follow this action.

Think of them what you will, they have dedicated over 20 years each to the City. It is a sad day when the reward for dedication is to be shown the door. I see that as true incentive for working your whole life to be promoted into an “At Will” position so you too can be shown the door. Being a career Sergeant with PBA protection does not look so bad considering the alternative.

If this action is allowed we all need be cautious as none of us can have the confidence or feeling of safety that we will be able to provide for our families working for a City that has no respect for the officers that protect them. Keep in mind they are saying that this could be the first step that there could be more cuts after October and who is to go next even the PBA contract has an inclusion for the process of reduction in force.

If this happens shame on the entire City for allowing it.

Lets say for argument sake we do have to cut people. Do we cut two Majors from the top or 5 Officers from the bottom? We are short now on the street!! Makes more sence for Public Safety to cut from the top the people in drop.
