View Full Version : City Police to merge with County Sheriff's office!!!

04-01-2008, 03:13 PM
Port Charlotte, FL (sun herald) – People living in the city of Punta Gorda will decide if their Police Department should merge with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.

There will be a public referendum in June. If approved, the Sheriff’s office would take over patrol duties and the approximately 45 full-time Punta Gorda Police Officers would become Sheriff’s Deputies.

A public hearing on proposed merger has been scheduled for April 7 at 7:30pm, at the Town Hall.

City manager Howard Kunik initiated the plan and presented it to Sheriff John Davenport and County administrator Bruce Loucks. The three announced the proposal Monday afternoon.

Most of the full-time officers who get moved to the county would make about the same in pay, but they're working on a plan to even out the differences in pay.

The police coverage of the town will not change under the plan. Taxes will go down for Punta Gorda residents and the rest of county would see no change.

City Manager Kunik says if the merger goes through effective in June or July, Clay residents will save the following on their 2009 Property Tax Bills:

House Assessed at $112,000
- Property Taxes go from $251 to $201 ($50 savings)

House Assessed at $202,000
- Property Taxes go from $453 to $362 ($90 savings)

The reduction is the product of money that would be saved in the second half of 2008 and all of 2009.

The city and county would like the five-year deal to be worked out by July 1st, if it is approved by voters.

Luckily, because ccso could not afford the quality officers that PGPD offers.

I almost believed this until I read that the city's coverage would remain the same. Lets be honest... the size of the city of PG is smaller then a one deputy zone in the county. You need more officers when you hire people that can't handle that much at once.

(I like you guys, but I can't believe you guys have nothing better to do then bash the deputies... we don't even worry about you guys... it would be a waste of energy)

Oh here we go again. Big bad CCSO, and litle old Punta Gorda. You have no clue what we do. Come look at at our daily numbers, incluiding arrest and see if you feel the same. Our daily numbers beat your entire south district.

April Fools!!!

Some other results of this merger:

1. The average PG Officer will be forced to gain about 25 lbs;
2. PG Officers will have to be trained to avoid work at all costs;
3. Crime will increase in the city dramatically;
4. Sex offenders will start moving back into the city;
5. All City officers will need to get security guard licenses;
6. City officers will have to learn how to bad mouth each other (and their spouses and girlfriends.

Fat chance you big goob!

Dont forget this.

They will have to learn to say "Sorry there is nothing we can do"
They wont be able to say "Central I think thats in the city"
and we will be there in about 30 minutes

Well, that is not hard. A Mid County night squad gets more activity than the whole south district.

But what would really be fun to watch is thos PG guys work in Mid County. They always compare themselves with D3. They forget to come where real things happen.

Yeah, your right. Mid-County is like the Bronx. You all must keep busy chasing all those sex offenders you have up there. It will be interesting to see how you measure up to the city when the crime stats come out. I hear they are changing the name to Metro Mid County. When I see those one-lined green cars with the faded light bars with rotators and the 400 lb deputy, it strikes fear in my heart.

Because of our modivated officers and our leadership, along with the overall pride that each officer has with the department and it's community, we are proud to boast the fact that our crime rate is lower then any other city in the state and we never say "sorry there is nothing we can do".

So dont even try to compare yourelf to the Punta Gorda Police.

Well since all you PGPD guys think you are high and mighty and better then everyone else, stop calling us for assistance or to babysit your calls, stop calling us for our k-9's, helicopter, crime scene etc. I mean according to the PGPD guys positing here we are suppose to be useless. For being so useless, you certainly call on us for help a lot.

Hopefully one day I can grow up and be a big bad podunk...er..I mean Punta Gorda Police Officer. :roll:

Hey, brothers and sisters in blue. Keep in mind that some frustrated deputy who is bashing and talking about his fellow deputies girlfriends and wives on the SO site has come to our site and is trying to start trouble here because we all get along.

Most of our green brothers and sisters are great. Don't let this azz start anything. Remember, he works for Libby, its an election year, and they are all irritable and at each other's throat. It's the nature of the greenie.

We could all name five deputies and the one writing this crap would be in that group.

So green weenie, bite us.

You never see CCSO just starting stuff with PGPD, it's usually the opposite. I have always enjoyed working with the City, and some of my best cop friends are there, but I hope this isn't the majority that feels this way. Seems like sour grapes to me...

Hey greenie, go back to your pathetic site and leave us alone.

Otherwise, get an application and get in line. We will at least take a look at people with Wackenhut experience.

Sadly the CCSO is ran by idiots and moral of the CCSO affects there jobs every day. We in blue stick together and never turn our backs on each other or there families.
