How much does your city charge to buy time (military or just regualr time)???? And is their a limit?? 1year -5years???

You can buy up to 5 years, actually it's pre-paying of your last 5 so you can retire and leave with 80% or go into the DROP after 20. It is 10% of your starting salary which is determined by what you start at. As we do laterals for previous police experience it will depend on that. But you have 10 years to pay for however many you buy.

Thanks really appreciate the info . While I'm at it what kind of shifts do you guys work and how are the days off rotated?? 8 10 12 ??

12's (11.5 actually, standard 2 on 3 off concept) every other weekend is three days off. We also have more outside detail than we can fill and the first $10,000 you make goes toward your pension final average. Not real important at first but very lucrative as you get close to retirement.

Thanks my friend I am extremely interested in the department and weighing my options. Is there any other info you can offer a prospective fellow employee?? For example pros and cons??? I know in this business thee are always issues but I am not afraid of work!

Can't think of a lot of con's, we of course have a few knuckleheads but not many. We are very young so mistakes get made but as long as you are trying to do the right thing (and not trying to dodge work) nobody comes down on you. They supply everything accept your socks and underwear so you don't have to buy much. Lots of outside details (with the casinos) so you can easily add another $10,000 to your pay.

The city manager and this commission like us and take ok care of us.

You only have to be here 3 years to take the sergeants test. The city pays for college tuition, we have a gym, marine patrol, swat, K9, no motorcycles though. I plan to retire from here, in fact the only people that have left in the last fews years did so when they retired.

Damn , being a "seasoned vet" (lolololol) I know how bad things can get or at least appear to get , and i really can see thought the B S . Man this sounds really good!!!! I know a few people who work there and they love it also. Well I hope if things go well with me i will really be considering your department. With the shifts (11.5) the days off obviously rotate?

Ya there are 15 of them just waiting to hire the officers to fill them. grab an app. I think they start a new process everytime they get ten applications, so the process go pretty quick.

We bid on the shift you want each year and usually switch in January. Once you have 2 years on you can bid a specialty unit, DB, narcotics, etc. but if you have experience and there is an opening, sometimes you can get it after you are off probation (1 year). We just picked up a guy from Orlando, another from FL ABT, a Pennsylvania cop, and a 25 year vet from Miami-Dade who looks in better shape than most of us. Bring a friend we could use the help.
