"One of the officers just turned his back for a moment and the suspect fled on foot. The bottom line is you can’t lose sight of him and you can’t sit him in a room no matter how calm and how cooperative they are," said Arenal.
Once the suspect left the roll call room, officers say he ran down a hallway, through a door and headed to the front exit. Once outside, officers say he ran through a motel parking lot.
"They set up a perimeter. They did call for air and K9 support," said Arenal.
Officers later found Culver hiding in a wooded area a few blocks away.
According to arrest reports, Culver kicked and punched a detective while on the loose.
"He was subsequently apprehended. He did receive a dog bite. He was also spayed with OC spray," said Arenal.
Culver’s criminal record includes robbery and theft charges in Georgia and a Martin County warrant for burglary and dealing in stolen property.
Police say he pulled a gun on a man during a fight at Punta Gorda Pines.
Arenal says the escape is the subject of an internal investigation.
"We have a very strong policy. It’s very clear that we have continuous visual observation of every prisoner. So obviously there was a breakdown somewhere, so we have to find out where it was and fix it," said Arenal.
