View Full Version : Anyone headed to the 116th?

01-14-2008, 09:39 PM
Hey fellas, anyone patroling this forum going to the academy in July? After reading all the garbage about morale, and pay I was having 2nd thoughts. But the Capt, and a couple positive posters makes me want to go for it.

01-14-2008, 10:17 PM
Haven't heard anything but I say go for it! You never know until you try. Yea, some of the gripping it true, but in this forum you never know who is posting. Just remember, FHP is not magical. In 10 years (unless you promote) you'll only be making about $400. a more than your first year.

Go in with your eyes open.

Don't read anything on here. And do not be so easily moved by this. Go to the Academy and make up your own mind.

I wish I could tell you go for it, but I can't. This place has some serious issues. If you have the chance to get hired elsewhere by all means do it!!! If you ever have a doubt about something dont do it! I wish I would have stuck by that and I would have been much better off.

I say go for it. But then again, I still enjoy being a Trooper. Sure I wish I made more money, but I knew what the salary was when I started. I don't have a family, so I can live on my salary. Depending on where you work, the job has a ton of freedom. I work maybe two wrecks a week and the rest of the time I can get into what I want. I can be proactive and hit the traffic hard, or maybe not...

I enjoy going to work because I have great co-workers. My day is mostly spent laughing with my buddies who I work with. The day I stop laughing at work, maybe I will move on. Some people hate going to work, whether it be a Trooper or any other job. I could go elsewhere and make more money, maybe in the private sector. But then I would I would use my own car to get there (at 3.10+ a gallon), sit in traffic, etc. Plus, there is a lot to be said about a BVD 10-8.

You can give a shot...you can always leave. Just don't listen to all the whining on here. Every job has people who will complain until the day they retire.

OK, what is BVD?
what is 10-8
and what is SOAR?

BVD 10-8=when you are working 7a-3p, but you wake up at 6:58a and you take a 10-8 (check on duty from portable radio) in your BVDs, or whatever type of underwear.

SOAR is an overtime program where you patrol and write tickets.

For one, you are lucky to have the ability to be proactive and work with other troopers. Not many of us have that and what it desparately. Two, I wouldn't call BVDing 10-8s a positive or a good thing.

We have openings in N. Florida, plus the current housing market allows some real cheap homes. I know not all parts of the state have my workload, and I consider myself lucky to be in area where I can be proactive and not work crashes all day. I feel bad for the guys in Orlando and similar areas where you are x65ing all day. I wish you had more manpower wherever you are (and more pay!). One of the options with this job is that when you get sick of an area, you can transfer and not have to go through another hiring process to go somewhere new. This job is not perfect, we all know this, but there are nice things about it.

As for the BVD x8, it happens to all of us once in a while.

Why would you want to go?

02-27-2008, 11:17 AM
Why would you want to go?

No kidding. Have all other jobs in the world been abolished? You must have a serious screw loose if you want a job with FHP after reading the posts on here.

Or get a wage above that of a common illegal field worker.

02-29-2008, 11:51 PM
Go to the Academy, get your year in the field then start applying to every higher paying Dept you can! Preferably one that has a 175 account. My son was hired last year by a FD in Central FL starting out at 3,000.00 more than I make after 25 years with FHP. Do it!

I was in the Patrol for over 4 years. I got good experience there, because I could concentrate on just traffic. When you apply to a PD or an SO, they are going to expect you to do traffic and criminal.

I would only spend the required time, I think 2years, so you do not have to pay them back for the academy, then leave.

Doing just traffic will give you a good foundation. Then you will have 2 years of traffic under your belt before you try working burglaries, neighbor trouble ETC>....

My pay went up about $600.00 per year, but there are years you won't get any raise!

I want it to the 116th so bad! I would be taking my FCJ-BAT and my PAT in March but I was a few days short of getting my app in!So I will have to visit Orlando in April.

Ok, I'm going to ask the inevitable question: WHY? You're already in the military--why do you want to spend 6-7 more months in an academy, only to make a poor salary ? But its not just about the money, its about the working conditions as well. There is no future in FHP. You will do the same thing on your day before retirement that you did on your first day on the road. You will work crashes and write tickets and for the most part, that's it. If you really like traffic, most departments have a traffic unit you can apply for after a few years. If you go to the academy, good luck man but I don't understand why you would. Thanks for serving.

I am so glad you asked. Its just some thing I want to do I have so much respect for Troopers that I want to be one. I think about it like this when you see that smokey the bear there is just no explanation just pure motivation! Hoo Rah!!!!!!!!

That "motivation" will wear off after about a year and then you will wonder "WTF am I doing here?" Trust me!

03-05-2008, 11:59 PM
Naw I cant say I will my uncle has been a Trooper for many years. He has been trying to get me to join for awhile now.

This job is nowhere near as bad as most on here make it out to be. If it were, noone would work here. They pay issue sucks, but the rest of it is great. Of course I am smart enough not to work down south or in a big city so I get to enjoy being a trooper. Get into what I want and work 3-4 S-4's a month. Not bad. No direct supervision. No commute to work on my dime and time. There is a lot to be said for being a trooper. Good luck with the hiring process. FHP has its share of whiners, just like every other agency. I truly believe that if we made $100,000 per year and did not have any calls for service but could do whatever we wanted, there would be these same old birds coming on here and telling us how bad FHP is.

3 or 4 crashes a month. You must work in BFE.

03-06-2008, 03:32 AM
3-4 crashes is a busy month for me.

In the Panhandle.

03-06-2008, 03:45 AM
LETS SEE JVILLE. 25-30 CRASHES A MONTH. 60-70 DAV'S. ABOUT 30 OTHER CALLS (SOMEONE WALKIN/DOIN SOMETHING CRAZY ON THE INTERSTATE, SIG. 20/ SIG.2). SEVERAL BOLOS A DAY. COURT. PEOPLE THAT SHOOT AT COPS (THE COPS THEMSELVES, THEIR HOUSES, AND THEIR CARS). BAKER ACTS. ETC,ETC, ETC..... THIS STORY IS REPEATED OVER AND AND OVER IN TYHE LARGE CITIES..ALSO WERE WAY UNDERSTAFFED. SO ENJOY YOUR REDNECK LAND. AND DONT TELL ME SOME OF US DONT DESERVE CAD, CAUSE EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT A HOUSE COSTS JUST AS MUCH IN QUINCY AS IT DOES IN ORLANDO.

03-06-2008, 03:50 AM
Hey retard, noone said you don't deserve more money. But you are the one dumb enough to keep working in such a fine district. Sorry I am not a redneck or in redneck land just because I choose not to live in a over populated crime ridden city. Sucks for you but does not make me something I am not. Learn how to articulate and not just throw around ignorant statements.

03-06-2008, 03:56 AM
Tpr when you say you can get into what you want to. Does that mean you can get off the highway and do some police work such as stopping suspicious people or going after knuckleheads breaking into cars? Thanks

03-06-2008, 03:56 AM
FHP is the best place for those who do not want to pursue or use spike strips and PIT right?

So the moral of the story is that in order for FHP to be worth it you have to be stationed in a county where no one lives.

We have plenty of people, just not a large city. Makes life more enjoyable when you do not have to move slowly between traffic lights all day. Personally I get into a little bit of everything. Preference is DUI. I have made drug arrests, stolen vehicle recovery(not running a tag and getting a S-10 hit on FCIC but actually investigating it myself), domestic violence. Fought with an armed felon and arrested a child porn freak. All on my own initiative.

If you want more action then have a county radio installed in your car and listen to their calls and respond. Gives you an opportunity to do more law enforcement than just FS 316.

Quit complaining about 25-30 crashes a month. That works out to a whopping 1-1.5 a day. The vast majority of those are short forms. Big deal.

The real problem with FHP is that they refuse to reject subpeonas for court on your days off or leave. When you have to work so much SOAR to make decent money and then have to give up your days off to go to court that could easily be rescheduled to coincide with your shift is a complete lack of respect on managements part. The SO here will not accept subpeonas on RDOs for their deputies but the ball less patrol refuses to out of fear of pissing somebody off. That is my real point of contention with the patrol. If the money was so bad I would leave for elsewhere rather than sitting and whining and making myself and those around me miserable.

Ok, I dont know what FHP you work for but if Im responding to 10-49 calls I will get written up. On top of that I would never have time to respond to calls that aren't mine. You may think FHP is great in your little world, but in most parts of the state it is terrible.

03-06-2008, 08:21 PM
I opted to have a county radio installed rather than have a pay raise. You figured it out genius. I cost us all our needed raise in order to have a county radio. Let's think about it. Who would provide a COUNTY radio. Perhaps the COUNTY. About half the troopers here have one.

I do not make it a habit to answer their calls but it gives a leg up on S-1 bolos. Usually I am the lone trooper 10-8 in my county so I will have to rely on 10-49 for backup if ever needed. I listen to their calls and will respond for backup it they need it. When I do need to call them it works a lot faster to utilize their radio rather than using FHP dispatch to contact their call taker to use their dispatch to send their deputy. Speeds things up quite a bit. Would not expect you morons to understand as you are worried about nothing but seeing just how little work you can do each day.

First, it shows how bad of times FHP is in if you are the lone trooper in the county some times (unless its Bradford or Union or similarly sized county)But, when you need to call 10-49, what call sign do you use? And does the county have an established call sign so they know its you?

03-06-2008, 10:12 PM
So is any one going to the 116th? HA HA LOL

03-06-2008, 10:55 PM
Nope, I am in an extremely large county, 1,066 square miles according to county website. Have an excellent SO that works vast majority of S-4s. Only ones I get called to are those involving Lifeflight or S-7. They do not waste 3 deputies time waiting on me. I also utilize the county radio to listen for them to be dispatched to an S-4 then I go and work it for them, try to help them out. They tend to get short handed during spring break and summer so I try to help them as much as possible. We here have a great working relationship with the SO. Wish those down south enjoyed the same. The petty crap you read on here between deputies and troopers down south is pathetic.

When I call on their radio I just identify myself as FHP, they know who I am. Hard to confuse me with any other trooper when I am it for the county for my shift.

03-06-2008, 11:14 PM
When do they start to send out cards or notices, to recruits to let them know that they are expected to report to the academy in June?

And what FHP do you work for? Clearing $2500 after 10 years is pretty dang bad in my book, not to mention all the other BS that goes on in FHP.

Hey fellas, anyone patroling this forum going to the academy in July? After reading all the garbage about morale, and pay I was having 2nd thoughts. But the Capt, and a couple positive posters makes me want to go for it.

not me.. but then again.. you need to try it for yourself if that is your dream.. just can't say you did not have all the info about the problems that are ongoing, have been going on and will probably go on.. good luck..

FHP is like smoking. People can tell you over and over how bad it is but yet people still do it.

YOU GUYS ARE NUTS IF YOU EVEN GOT TO THIS ACADEMY, I HOPE YOU GUYS FIND JOBS SOMEWHERE ELSE ONCE YOU TAAKE THAT STATE TEST. THINCK HARD AND DONT GET TIED UP WITH FHP HUNT FOR OTHER DEPARTMENTS WHILE YOU IN THE ACADEMY, DONT WORRY ABOUT PAYING BACK ITS PEANUTS PLUS ITS BS MORE THAN HALF THE TIME. GET CERTIFIED AND GET OUT.

SIN. SOON TO BE EX-TROOPER

Good riddance, maybe your new agency will teach you how to write.

if you have to get a county radio put in your cruiser on your own dime then... nevermind Im at a loss for words

If this in reference to my earlier posts then the answer is that the county radio is provided by the county and installed by the county personnel. Nothing on my dime or time. Maybe that clears it up for you.

Sgt didn't bust your balls for that?

Why would my sgt care?

cuz they got nuttin better to do

03-20-2008, 03:33 AM
My sgt is 10-8. I do not have to worry about him busting my balls over something that I use productively. I guess he is intelligent enough to realize what is important and what is not. If your sergeant would have a problem with you having a county radio installed in your patrol car at no expense to the patrol then I would question your sergeant actually having taken and passed the sergeant's exam.

You guys are getting off subject. This is for Anyone heading to the 116 class.

Has anyone heard anything yet?

I see the class was moved up to June 27, 2008.

Good! At least we are getting through to some people. Hopefully we will see you employed by a real agency someday!

I question that anyway! Based on the sgts I have seen you must be able to christmas tree that test and past. Im ashamed to work under some of these people.

Like I have said many times before....FHP is like smoking. You can tell people over and over how bad it is and not to do it, yet people continue to. Sometimes listening to the advice of others that have experienced it is worth a lot!
