All FHP Duty Officers feel free to bring up your conserns about your troop, agency supervisors, troopers etc... Don't be shy we won't know who you are unless you say so.

I feel one of our BIGGEST problems in the Comm centers is not enough CALL TAKERS!! If you are on a VERY BUSY radio like I am it is very hard to answer the phones, input calls into the cad, run FCIC, and dispatch all at the same time. I have worked the radio from both sides so I know what it is like for the troopers and us DO'S. Most troopers I work with realize we are not just sitting there waiting for them to call in and they seem to know when I am VERY x6 with phones. However my duty is to the radio and when a DOS yells over "PICK UP YOUR PHONE" when I am already answering a phone, calling for a wrecker running a hit, and dispatching another call I wonder "What's wrong with this picture" Well that is my only BEEF with the PATROL NOT ENOUGH CALL TAKERS.

Or how about not even adding more call takers since ours don't answer the phone til the 5th ring - D/O's, put down the spider solitaire for a second and just pick it up! We got trainees that don't even answer the phone!

I know exactly how you feel! We don't even have any call takers on my shift, we are the jack of all trades!

Maybe this thread should be moved over to the FHP BLOG I bet you would get more replies. FHP DUTY OFFICERS are a PART OF FHP and I know for a fact read the FHP BLOG. There should not be a seperate BLOG for DISPATCHERS/DUTY OFFICERS WE SHOULD BE LISTED UNDER OUR AGENCIES. After all we are a big part of the agency not step children to be cast off to the side., just my thoughts.

There is a captain Im not saying who or where that thinks "dispatchers work for the highway patrol but are not part of the highway patrol" This is the shitza we go through down here among others. Also the DOS treating us like little kids yelling at us to pick up the phone when they are just sitting down chatting with the shift commander, and having to literally ask permission to go to take a piss. This is why this thread is away from the FHP thread.

04-29-2008, 07:48 PM
If you had your choice of areas (i.e. Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Brevard, Volusia, Lake) to dispatch for (ORCC) which would you choose and why????

Sore Ears

What is the current pay in the Tampa area for Calltakers and Dispatchers?

05-01-2008, 06:38 PM
[quote="Anonymous"]you can say the same thing abour orcc, everytime i call it just rings and rings and rings[/quote)

you must of missed the memo, we handle more calls then any other troop in Florida. When 20 lines are ringing and we have 9 DO's yes its going to ring.

You might want to look at the incident numbers issued by each regional cc before you ***** about how busy you are, Orlando.

Orlando comes in 3rd behind Lake Worth and Tampa.

05-04-2008, 02:48 PM
And, Lake Worth doesn't have any call takers (effective or not) to answer any of the calls.

We don't have any CSO's either.

We are very much apart of FHP. We are truely the first responders! There is no credit given to us. We may be appreciated and loved by co-workers, supervisors and our troopers but at the end of the day we get no love from the state. NO APPRECIATION from the state what-so-ever!

With that said, I want you to know that I LOVE my job. When I took this job I knew what i was getting into. I gladly signed the paper stating that I was aware that I would receive an annual review (RAPP) but I would not receive a raise. I was hopeful that things would change for us. I work with people who have been waiting for change for 30 years. I was still hopeful. I didn't care because I finally found something that I was good at. I could see myself retiring in 30years from FHP.

Since Electra ran off Chris Knight, I feel like no one has our back. Who is there for us. Chris stood up for FHP and lead by example. Now I feel like our A@@e@ hanging in the wind and our supervisors heads are on a chopping block. I am not speaking for anyone else, but I feel VERY UNAPPRECIATED by the state.

For example, the Shift Commander program. Our shift commanders are irreplaceable. They take alot of burden off of our shoulders. At least ours do. People that have been here for a while remember when there were no Shift Commanders. Well, I think abolishing this program is a bad idea. First of all, we handle more and more stuff on the highways these days. Think of how many S22's we handle on a weekly basis. Forget that, on a daily basis. Today, I have handled 3 so far, just for my console. This isn't 1976 it's 2008, and stuff goes down hill in a hurry. In our comm center our Shift Commanders are the ones who give out THI case numbers for the Turnpike. We are our own calltakers, dispatchers, teletypes, and sometimes even supervisors. When I (we)have a S7, I have more responsibilities. Now, I have to get up from my console to go and find a THI case number, answer calls from the media as well as whiny people stuck in traffic because the road is shutdown. And did I mention I have to Alpha page the brass? Ummm yup thats right. So again I ask, who is there for us? The ones I feel sorry for are the supervisors, because they are not "Career Service" employees. So what happens to them when they screw up? And they are asking us to do more with no pay increase. What a joke.

Although I think it's a slap in the face, I'm glad our troopers got a small raise. Maybe just maybe a few good ones will stay. As for the dispatchers, I don't feel as fortuante for them. I see more and more great dispatchers heading for the door. I think they see the ones who have been here for more than 20 years and know that change will never come.

Did you hear they are doing away with uniforms? Yup that's right! They are working on a dress code for us right now. But as far as I know, because my Captain told me, we will be wearing business attire. Collared shirts and dress pants. And who is going to pay for this? Ummm, we are. Right after they take our uniform allowance away. I asked if we could still wear our uniform shirts. The answer...."NO." Nice, right? I can barely make it on the salary that I get now and you want me to buy my own clothes....good luck on that. I can barely afford goceries toward the end of the month. I know I'm not the only one out there.

Now, the topper on the cake is, we just had an open advertisement. We hired several DL people. When January rolls around they will have more seniority than me. And a ton of other people too. How is it, that you move between state agencies and are allowed to keep your seniority? Please explain that one to me. Ok, ok , I know how it works but I think that's ridiculous. If you move agencies, you should NOT keep your seniority. You should not have more seniority than someone who has 5 years on and has paid their dues. Your time should start when you begin employment with that agency.

I have 2 friends that transferred to other comm centers in the state. They trained in a comm center where they earned CAD pay. They lost it when they transferred. That is something that needs to be looked at. They earned it, they should keep it. Just like Troop E has shift differential. Where is it for the rest of us. They talk about how we are a para military organization then they should make it consistent for all of us. I'm not saying Miami doesn't deserve it, but we don't?

Last year I had a call from one of our lovely legislators, who was traveling the turnpike. He shall remane nameless. Just know HE is from South Florida. I distinctly remember that we had 4 people working that day, on a 7 day stretch, with no DOS and a Shift Commander that came out to help answer phones because we were so busy. I answered the phone only to find myself being yelled at by one of our precious legislators. He yelled that it took too long to answer the phone. I tried to explain that we were very busy and short handed. He continued to yell at me about a piece of tire debris that was already called in by about 500 hundred other people. In the end I was polite and did my job. However, he didn't let it go and asked to speak to my supervisor. I told him that he could speak to my Lt. because there was no supervisor available. He wanted to complain on me. Was he kidding? I think not. He was dead serious. Lt. took care of the complaint and told him to write his Govenor. The irony is I provided great customer service and still had a complaint. From a legislator no less. It shows just how much they appreciate us.

Now do you see why I feel like I do? I challenge anyone from Tallahassee to come and sit with me for an entire 8 hour shift. I challenge any of them to come and answer phones for an entire 8 hour shift. During hurricanes and brush fires that are out of control. I challenge them to be on the other end of the phone because a loved one wants to know where their loved one is. I want them to be here to answer media questions when you have a fatality. I dare them to come in and do the job we do on a daily basis for one shift. I guarentee they will look differently at us.

And as for that Captain who thinks that dispatchers are not apart of the highway patrol,he should come in and work a shift for us! He couldn't do, I guarentee it! He should remember the next time he is getting his rump kicked on the side of the road who really has his back. WE DO...BECAUSE WE ROCK!

Love and best wishes go out to all of you, no matter what agency you work for, who put up with jerks like that on a daily basis. He isn't why we do this job!

LOOK CHILDREN, EVERY COMM CENTER HAS THEIR SHARE OF LAZY PEOPLE WHO DO NOTHING BUT PLAY GAMES AND WORK THE INTERNET ALL DAY LONG WHILE THE REST OF US WORK OUR TAILS OFF. THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT MAKE "DUTY OFFICER OF THE YEAR"!!

GO FIGURE...IF WE COULD ALL JUST AGREE THAT WE HAVE A HECK OF A WORK LOAD AND THEN WORK LIKE A TEAM THINGS WOULD BE BETTER FOR US AND FOR THE TROOPERS

Just curious does anyone know the stats for the RCC's? Whaty is the ranking as far as calls for service and telephone calls received

Look at the FHP website and look at the current incidents....if you click on one in any of the troops it will show you the CAD incident number assigned....not the case numbers, but the total number of incidents entered into that RCC's server.

Look, to me FHP Dispatchers are NOT first responders, nor are the Troopers!! Fire Rescue is onscene WAY before Troopers are 99% of the time.

We (as an FHP dispatcher) seldom deal with suicides, or I'm going to kill my baby or myself or anything of that nature. We DO deal with these situations but not nearly as often as real 911 dispatchers. So to me comparing FHP Dispatchers to 911 Dispatchers is like apples and oranges.

That's just my opinion.

Now, does FHP do some "real" police work? If they feel like it, or if it is in their best interest then yes. And just to say it we do traffic homocide investigations and all, AND we have a felony team that could be way more productive than they are, but they are crippled by the fact that FHP is so scared to be sued that they will let criminals (even known felons) get away, because they are so afraid of a lawsuit (justified or not) that they will call any units off of a pursuit for that reason and that reason alonel Even if it's on CNN!!

The dispatchers are miserable because we have a Capt. that is miserable, gay or not, that does not matter. He is still a miserable and lonely person, and while he is miserable he will make everyone's life miserable that he thinks he may control. I hate him, and I personally think he needs to just come out out of the closet.

But that is neither here nor there, the fact is that he is pushing away many of us by being such a jerk and he has no idea of the damage that he is doing.

So in closing, yes, EVERYONE has shit bags, and everyone has the good ones (whether officers or dispatchers or Captains...)

And yes the stories you've heard here are real and true beyond belief. I compare my capt to hitler because my capt. is devoid of seeing or hearing anything but his own feelings. He shuts down and will not see or even think of anything different than his original plan, and that to me goes against all of the rights of any American!! He would and does jeoprodize himself and the well being of his staff only because he see's something and all rules are laid by what he see's, or interprits when he see's anything!!

He just needs to come out and then he will be a much happier person!!!

Until then god help us all!!!!

Orlando comes in 3rd behind Lake Worth and Tampa.

The only reason Orlando comes in 3rd is because we don't pad our stats!!!
we don't issue a case number everytime a trooper goes on a 208...that's not a legitimate incident....we don't issue a case number every time a trooper does a follow up - that is not a legitimate incident....if you took the actual legitimate calls that are recieved in the Orlando comm center and compared them to the "real" calls in the other comm centers Orlando would come out on top hands down.

Our troopers work harder and longer than any other troop in the state.

TRCC has some openings. Transfer up. The DOS's are terrific, the 107 is a doll, and the Captain is gone most of the time. The cost of living is cheaper, too. I made the move (I won't say where from) and no regrets. It's an overall nice place to work. :D

All FHP Duty Officers feel free to bring up your conserns about your troop, agency supervisors, troopers etc... Don't be shy we won't know who you are unless you say so.

I have to drive an hour one way to get to work every day.
That is not FHP's fault at all... but it sure would be nice if they considered my and all other duty officers' gas costs a month and allowed for 10 or 12 hour shifts that would get us off the road so much during the work week.

My Captain says that People First would be the problem because they couldn't work it out in hours every week.

People First isn't my problem.. they NEED to work it out.. my "problem" is that I don't get to keep as much of my paycheck as I should be keeping due to the higher gas prices. It's already costing me over $170.00 a week.

Why does it take a high paid captain to run a rcc? You are civilian employees and you have civilian dos. You should have a civilian in charge of the rcc and free up the monies spent on captains in rcc's. This agency has way too many administrators and not enough people doing the job. But, then again having happy employees is not a priority of the state of florida.

Excuse me but Tampa FHP Dispatch doesn't pick up regular lines or 911 calls in a timely manner either. Try having a 911 emergency call that you have to transfer to FHP and they don't pick up their 911 lines within 3 rings and that's being generous. Do you know how embarassing it is to tell the caller, "I'm sorry, but FHP is who you need to speak to and they will pick up in a few moments." It's so frustrating when you have to transfer a call over to them or you have to call over on a regular line. Their dispatchers/call takers are beyond rude and they think they know it all. Just because they are a state agency doesn't mean they are better then everyone else. I have news for them. I considered working as a FHP dispatcher at one time, but after having to deal with them and their unprofessionalism, including their supervisor, I reconsidered. Not sure if they got the memo, but dispatchers need to stick together as a lot of times dispatchers get a bum wrap and get blamed for everything.

Hey trooper use the radio to communicate with us!!!
The phone is not answered because there is only a few of us answering the radio and the phone.
So if I have Joe Blow Public on the line calling me about a stupid ass idiot who cut him off and
a trooper taking a 10-50 on the radio, and you are calling me to tell me you are going to be 10-6 eating at
La Carreta, just use the radio.

It's s sad day when FHP can't conduct a field sobriety test in a high net worth building such as the Vue. Residence were simply sitting in thebench they fund, 20 feet from the investigation and are ordered inside by the bits in brown. A resident was threatened and exercised the right for protection and was physically threatened to call 911 again. Law enforcement id generally professional, it's sad a few insecure officers endanger the lives of their peers. The public has the right to witness the actions of civil servants, the abuse of power is the cause behind of violence toward our so called protectors. You're cops not God, not doctors, do not over complicate your civil duty. Protect the public but refrain from at agonizing.

Whenever I key the radio, my trunk opens. I. try not to use it because it's a pain having to pull over and shut the trunk, or tying it down makes it hard to open. I HATE THIS JOB !!!! They won't fix it. It's getting real old
