If you do get a reward, remember: It is taxable. Failing to report it is an easy way to attract the IRS's attention. One Colorado disc jockey received an IRS reward of $7,138.20 in 1998 and didn't report it. He argued that he had shared the award with several co-workers. In Tax Court, however, a special trial judge said the letter the IRS had sent the man identifying the reward was addressed solely to him and didn't indicate he had an obligation to share it with anyone else.

what if he got a check for over $110K?

"If one reaches these larger amounts, the reward is from 15% to 30% of the tax collected, depending upon the extent to which the whistleblower contributed to the additional collection. If the IRS determines that the whistleblower’s information was not the original source of information, but still contributes to the additional collection, the IRS can award up to 10% of the amount collected."
