Miami's police union passed a vote of no-confidence Tuesday against Miami Chief John Timoney and Deputy Chief Frank Fernandez.

Of the 650 officers who voted, 80.7 percent voted against Timoney and 85.1 percent voted against Fernandez, the union's board announced.

''This sends a clear message not only to the elected officials but to the citizens of Miami that morale is extremely low,'' said Armando Aguilar, the president of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Aguilar has called for the ouster of Timoney and Fernandez, citing a heavy-handed management style, uneven discipline for officers and an overemphasis on crime statistic accountability.

However, Miami Mayor Manny Diaz released a statement Tuesday night saying he stands behind Timoney and Fernandez.

''Today's vote does not diminish my confidence in Chief Timoney and Chief Fernandez,'' Diaz wrote. ``Their record of reforms and crime fighting have made the City of Miami Police Department a national model for policing.''

While the vote is symbolic, the union says its carries extraordinary significance.

In an interview last week, Timoney dismissed the vote as political handiwork of a union board bent on returning to the days of officers operating with little oversight.

''If mayors started paying attention to this nonsense, policing in America would be in chaos,'' Timoney said.

Timoney can only be fired by Miami City Manager Pete Hernandez.

The call for a vote came late last month after CBS-WFOR4 reported that Timoney had driven a dealer Lexus SUV free of charge for more than a year. The union says it gave the story to the television station.

THERE IS A DOUBLE STANDARD, YOU TOOK A VERY EXPENSIVE GIFT AND VIOLATED THE POLICE OFFICERS CODE OF ETHICS. YOU HAVE NOT BEEN INVESTIGATED, YOU HAVE NOT BEEN DISCIPLINE AND NOW YOU MAKE THE STUPID STATEMENT THAT THERE IS A CONSPIRACY AGAINTS YOU AND YOU ADMINISTRATION. WELL CHIEF, THERE IS ALWAYS A CONSPIRACY, BUT YOU STILL TOOK A GIFT AND YOU HAVE LOST ALL CREDIBILITY WITHIN THE LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY IN MIAMI DADE COUNTY.

LET THE TRUTH BE KNOWN!
