POMPANO BEACH - A deputy rolled his squad car on Tuesday while swerving out of the way of an oncoming car going the wrong way on the 1000 block of North Powerline Road, the Broward Sheriff's Office reported.
The teenage driver of the wrong-way vehicle fled the vehicle on foot, but was quickly taken into custody. He was later identified as an unlicensed 15-year-old boy. He was taken to an area hospital for a checkup. Charges are pending, BSO said in an e-mailed report.
The deputy, who was not immediately identified, was not injured, but was taken to a nearby hospital for an exam.
The incident started around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when a man driving a car northbound on Powerline attempted to make a left turn or a U-turn near Northwest 10th Court. Somehow, the man ended up crossing the median and began driving south in the northbound lanes of Powerline Road. The deputy, who was driving north on Powerline saw the errant vehicle heading the wrong way and swerved to avoid it. The deputy's car rolled at that point, BSO said.
