Sheriff Jenne and Col. Auer are doing a great job with the sheriff's office, however what were they thinking when they hired an inept defense attorney to run the Broward Sheriff's Office Crime Laboratory? I have had the opportunity to speak to a number of laboratory employees and I am in disbelief at the low morale throughout the laboratory. The majority of laboratory employees are so disgruntled that they can't wait to get out! This "so called commander" has never supervised a single employee in his entire career and now he is in charge of 60 to 80 employees!

07-10-2007, 01:13 AM
I've heard that too. The morale in the lab couldn't be lower. I have a question maybe someone can answer. Why do the Detectives and Sergeants in the crime scene unit answer to a civilian lab commander? Why not the chain of command in Regional Investigations? Are they trying to get rid of sworn personnel in the crime scene unit? [/quote]

We are an ineffective, inefficient agency! Try and take a stupid joint to the lab sometime and you will know how the lab works. You lab guys are prima donnas, you can't take anything at the back door etc. Stupid clowns!

07-10-2007, 10:19 PM
reply to stupid:Maybe if you make arrest for more than a joint, the lab people will let you use their back entrance.I bring all my evidence to the back and they always let me in,they are very nice with our unit.so get your facts togheter, maybe you have to consider that they have supervisors, who tell them who comes to the back door,it seems to me that they are having serious problems with their supervisors,Iheard the new lab director is a pain,so cut them a break, the lab people are very professional, the problem is the empty suits who run the show..

07-10-2007, 10:51 PM
Mr. oldcop: I have been around probably longer than you. Whether it's a joint that you cannot destroy because you would destroy your job, it's a pain how they make you park in the garage, go across the bridge, go down to the lab, then come back up to the thrird floor, go to the elevators on the old side, go to the district office and get your ticket validated, then come back up to the third floor, go over the bridge to the garage. Whew!!!!!!!!! I guess you are special since you are a super cop. Oh, who cares that they have a tyrant for a boss, we all have one. That's the BSO way.

Well bring more then one item and don’t complain. Then you can use the back door. The inmates have no moral, work incentive, and take crappy attitudes all day. Then some deputy insists on having a freaking red carpet rolled out for him at the back door for one item every other week at best. Get a life.

Complaining to stressed out and short staffed people; Who make less then you , don’t get overtime, holiday pay, job advancement, good union representation, and NO TAKE HOME VEHICLE w/ gas.....will only make it harder on you.

How about giving some respect and courtesy to the lab personnel, then getting command staff to really listen to the lab employees to make some positive changes and see how things can be different.

That procedure does sound a little ridiculous when you see it in print. I know this is stepping out on a limb, but maybe a common sense approach might work, (I know that's a stretch). If all drugs, firearms, etc. that are going to the lab could be secured in the district office and then transported to the lab once or twice a week by one person, wouldn't that make more sense? The person transporting would have to sign all property receipts and bring the copies back to put in the deputy's mailbox. This is nothing new. If the district chiefs would discuss this with the lab commander, this could probably work. A CSA could do this as they do in most of the city agencies that drop off drugs or firearms. They are let in the back door. This would streamline the procedure and possibly minimize the length of time a person was out of the district.

Any thoughts why this wouldn't work?

I need to become a Crim III, why do you ask?

Well ..........I get paid 88K a year, dress like Im going out partying, and work 7.5 to maybe 8 hours on a 10 hour shift. Not to mention complain I have too much work and push it off on to the Crim II s. Then be insubordanate to my supervisor.

Thats great!

How to fix the problems with the lab.

1. build a new one that:
A. does not have mold
B. ventilation suitable for a lab.
C. give each unit proper working space.
Why does a certain unit need a ton of space for 5 cases a year and the unit that handles the most evidence is shoe horned into a dump.

2. Pay-parity
A. this would boost morale.
B. it would put those ego crazed Criminalists in there place

3. New commander
A. one that appreciates ALL disciplines.
B. someone that listens to the employees and follows through with support. hell it would be hard to find one but its better then a used car salesman like lawyer.

Ill second that. The lab building is too small and old to handle the current case load. Its like trying to fit a dump truck size load into a pick-up. Not to mention move it away from the court house so they arent at every Judge and lawyers beckoning call.

There's nothing else like sitting at your desk and hearing the water running through the drain pipes from the prisoner's toilets on the floor above.

If the leadership of the lab would press the PSB for a few more employees and better facilities more cases would be solved. I would say at least 10 to 15% more!

And its amazing how anything gets done when the managers and directors bicker among themselves about everything, fight over limited resources, and disrespect the general lab employees. IF the management would just talk to the staff: state what is going on, what is expected, and ask for Ideas how things could improve.

Then again when the supervisors work what ever hours they want hard to keep the employees informed when them too arrive hours late and leave early.

09-26-2007, 07:06 PM
Ahhh! The latest from the wonderful lab commander! Someone allegedly took an item out of a locked room without permission. This locked room was accessed by lab and crime scene personnel. Crime Scene reports are locked in this room. Due to the alleged theft of a $50 or $100 item, the sworn personnel cannot access their own reports to prepare for court. The sworn personnel have to be escorted, yes escorted by one of the civilian personnel that are apparently trustworthy.

I guess we are all guilty until proven innocent. Kind of ironic, since the lab commander used to be a defense attorney.

Same commander that tells you to use the board and swipe the access cards to see who's there or not. But lets Criminalists come in late and leave early because their supervisor cant com in early to check if people are working their shifts.

WE're trying to make it better but we hit road blocks every bit of the way.

How would you feel if you work in one district and deputies doing the exact same thng in another get paid 12K more then you for the same job description and same or less experiance? On top of that you cant transfer and the union could careless, complaining up the ladder does not do any good.

This forum lets management know its more then one person upset with the system and give's people a place to express their opinions and possible solutions without repercussions.

Probably the same when you work in a district where you are always working short, can't get a day off (but comp time please, no OT) , and cant attend any training. Welcome to my boat.

Really Dr. Ongley... I would have expected more from a man of your education...

Ask any management expert and they will tell you this is the absolute worst response a manager could have to problems in his organization. This shows that you have no regard for your employees and you consider them all expendable. It shows that you don't care about their concerns or problems and that you have no intention of working toward resolving any issues whatsoever.

In fact, it proves what many have been saying all along, you are definitely not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

I love it when people come into a forum like this and show their ignorance. To make a general statement like "You lab people are losers..." about an entire group of people is pretty childish. Do you know everyone in the lab? And you have the same opinion of everyone in the lab? Does that include all the sworn personnel in crime scene as well?

If you are a cop, (and I really doubt that) you should know that most of the lab personnel do their job well and are a much needed part of the process. Try to prove a case in court without the crime lab. The "lab people" as you call them, are understaffed and overworked and most people outside of the lab don't have a clue as to what goes on there.

What is it that you do HR that you are so happy in your job and find it so easy to badmouth others? If you've got some beef with someone or some issue with the lab, then say so, but don't waste everyones time with offhanded generalizations and petty name-calling. Try to show at least a little intelligence here.

1. build a new one that:
A. does not have mold
B. ventilation suitable for a lab.
C. give each unit proper working space.

2. Pay-parity
A. this would boost morale.

3. New commander

B. someone that listens to the employees and follows through with support. hell it would be hard to find one but its better then a used car salesman like lawyer.

Pay parity? What? Latent examiners are already paid way too much compared to examiners working for other agencies. You want moral improvement. Get rid of the dead beats.

Now, they have way too many civilian employees who whine, latent examiners that could care less if they make a comparison, and the overall misery that I see in their faces. I wish I had a time machine to turn this place back a decade and a half.

How many people has the Lab lost in the past 3 months and why? What is anyone doing to get the lab back up to speed?

03-21-2008, 06:59 AM
I work at a county lab in California and thought about applying for the DNA position at the BSO Crime Lab. I met a couple of the staff at forensic meetings that have stated that there may be a position. The men and women there seem like friendly enough group.

Since the forensic community is pretty small, I started doing a little bit of homework and learned that the lab director is a former medical examiner and defense attorney. That seems pretty impressive.

But when I started looking into the background of the QA coordinator, I cannot seem to get a straight answer as to where this person stands in the chain-of-command. I am told that this person is equal to the lab managers, but then I am told that this person supervises the lab managers?

This is kind of an important question for me since many in the community generally regard QA coordinators as a group who for one reason or another could not maintain their qualifications to do casework or research. QA is on a power trip here in California. These folks are now trying to dictate how technical procedures are to be performed when they not qualified academically or through practical experience to make such recommendations.

I don't want to leave one bad lab for another.

So, it really true that the lab has had hundreds of corrective actions under the leadership of the Lab Manager and QA coordinator in the last three years? Is this why the lab is outsourcing their DNA work to private labs?

03-21-2008, 08:55 PM
The lab has only lost a secretary in the the last 3 months. However, this month the lab will lose one employee in DNA and one in Latent Prints.

03-21-2008, 10:22 PM
Job Seeker is looking for a DNA position at the Crime Lab? There hasn't been an opening in that unit for almost three years. Last hired is now resigning.

The QA Coordinator assumed the job duties of second in command when promoted to QA Manager last year, including supervising the other managers who are at same pay and rank.

Corrective actions and outsourcing? They have nothing to do with each other.

03-24-2008, 01:27 AM
Interesting. So, if the QA manager is supervising the supervisors, then what is the Lab Director doing? Surfing the web?

It seems they are more willing to take the minor burglary or whatever without any question. But then they want to pick and chose what they will or will not accept for a murder case. Seems like a less is more thing. Whats up with that? Is it the head DNA doc that is the problem or what?

Hey do you guys (BSO), or any other Broward agency have issues with getting DNA evidence accepted by the Lab? I'm talking about major cases. It seems they are more willing to take the minor burglary or whatever without any question. But then they want to pick and chose what they will or will not accept for a murder case. Seems like a less is more thing. Whats up with that? Is it the head DNA doc that is the problem or what?

I have never had a problem submitting a case so long as I can get a hold of the good Dr., then we reach an understanding of what needs to be worked. These folks are slammed just as bad as any other unit in the S.O.

If their is one gripe that I have it is the DNA reports. Sometimes I can't make head or tails of what's what because they make up item numbers for stuff that doesn't exist on the property receipts. For instance, when I submit an item 1, 2 and 3, the report I get lists items A1, A1.1, A2, A2.1, A3, A3.1. How does three items turn into six? When I put cases together, I read the report and find myself looking all over creation for phantom items that don't exist. Surely with the vocabularies those folks have they could call the samples they test something else other than, "item." How about using the word, "sample?"
