TO: Law Enforcement Sergeant Promotional Exam Candidates

SUBJECT: 2007 Promotional Exam
This is initial notification of the eligibility and testing requirements for the promotional process for LAW ENFORCEMENT SERGEANT as follows:
Eligibility Requirements 1. Employment: Candidates must have successfully completed this agency’s full patrol field training and have at least three (3) consecutive years as a Law Enforcement Deputy 1st Class immediately preceding the date of examination.
2. College: Must have an AA/AS degree from an accredited institution.
3. Evaluations: Under the Performance Management Plus (PMP) evaluation system, the candidates must have an overall ”Meets standards” for the two(2) years prior to participation in the promotional process with no unsatisfied RI’s.
4. Discipline: Must have no sustained Level 3, 4, or 5 complaints for previous two (2) years and no sustained complaints of any level pertaining to moral turpitude, integrity or insubordination for previous two (2) years.
5. Endorsement: Must provide written endorsement of current immediate supervisor and Bureau Commander. Testing Requirements
The Sergeant Examination will be composed of the following:• Forty (40) questions from the New “Effective Police Supervision, Fifth Edition”
textbook.
• Thirty (30) questions from the “Sarasota Sheriff’s Office General Orders Manual” (revisions effective after July 1, 2007 not included).
• Twenty-five (25) questions from the “Florida Criminal Law and Motor Vehicle Handbook”. Traffic statute questions not included.
• Five (5) questions from the “Sarasota County Ordinance Manual” (revisions effective after July 1, 2007 not included).Date, Time, Location and Textbook
The written examination will be given on Saturday, September 8, 2007, at 0900 hrs. in the Potter Building, 2896 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota. All leave requests should be planned accordingly. Those personnel on duty will have to make arrangements to have their shift covered. Please coordinate this with your supervisor.
The written test review will be conducted on Saturday, September 15, 2007, in the 2nd floor conference room of the Criminal Justice Building from 0900 to 1100 hrs.
The textbook will be “Effective Police Supervision, Fifth Edition” by authors More, and Miller. The Lexis Nexis Anderson Publishing Company publishes the book. Our agency’s Personnel Section has limited copies available to be loaned out. This material however, can be ordered directly from Lexis Nexis Anderson Publishing by calling their ordering department at 1-800-833-9844. The textbook (ISBN 1593453310) is $66.95 and the study guide (ISBN 1593454570) is $23.95.
All candidates must complete a “Certification of Eligibility” form as illustrated in appendix 1 of General Order 9.4 and submit to Personnel Manager Barbara Brief, along with the required endorsements, no later than Friday, August 10, 2007.
