Juvenile center coming back to SSO jail
The Juvenile Assessment Center has gotten the green light to come back to the Sarasota County Jail.

Thanks to a change in heart by the Department of Juvenile Justice, the Juvenile Assessment Center will resume its location at the Sarasota County Jail and certain funds originally earmarked to cover the move will instead go toward its operating costs.

The center, a facility in the jail which provided detention screening, psychosocial assessments, drug testing and case management to juveniles detained by law enforcement officers, was closed Oct. 1, 2006, because it was found by the Department of Juvenile Justice to be in violation of the Martin Lee Anderson Act.

Follow-up story:

Sheriff cleared to book and screen juveniles at the jail
Florida authorities have legally cleared the way for juveniles to be booked at the Sarasota County jail and professionally screened at an on-site assessment center before they are either released into the custody of parents or incarcerated.

On Monday, a Department of Juvenile Justice attorney notified county officials such a process was not subject to arrest restrictions outlined in the Martin Lee Anderson Act, a 2006 state law passed after the death of a Florida teenager at a Bay County sheriff's boot camp.
