Post your links to 100% online and regionally accredited Associates, Bachelors and Masters degrees in Criminal Justice. I'll start:Associates or Bachelors in Public Safety from St. Petersburg College (http://www.spcollege.edu/). It's part of Florida's State University system and the tuition is dirt cheap.

Masters in Criminal Justice from Florida State University (http://www.criminology.fsu.edu/p/academic-deg-online-masters.php). It's part of Florida's State University system. Everybody loves FSU. ;)

Masters in Criminal Justice from University of Massachusetts (at Lowell) (http://continuinged.uml.edu/online/cjmasters.htm). I had to post this one because it's from my home state and it's part of the Massachusetts State University system.

Anyone who's received or is working on this, I have 2 questions for you:

1) How long did it take you to complete the coursework, and

2) Did you have any prior college credits upon admission or did you "start from scratch"?

Thanks!

06-25-2007, 04:23 PM
1) How long did it take you to complete the coursework?
This isn't in regard to the SPJC program for a Bachelors in Public Safety. I haven't seen how that program works, except that I know it's an outstanding program because it's part of Florida's state university system. The fact that it's online is amazing because it allows public safety officers to do their coursework 24/7/365, regardless of their work schedule. For example, if you're working nightshift and if it's your day off and if you can't sleep at 0300 hours, you can STILL log-in to do your school work. Awesome!

Some of the programs are "accelerated" for a couple of reasons: Students who enter with an AA degree have already met all of their lower division coursework, so they can immediately start on their upper division coursework. The college or university accepts all the AA coursework. That's good.
[/*:m:3nk7kv7s]
Some of these schools offer shorter terms or semesters (or whatever it's currently being called). The number of hours remains the same, but instead of spreading it out over 16 or 20 weeks (the traditional way), it's condensed into a 6 or 8 week period. For example:
a) Old way: MWF from 0800-0850 over 16 weeks.
b) New way: T & Th from 1800-2200 over 6 or so weeks.
c) Newer way: online! (a lot of universities are using something called "blackboard")[/*:m:3nk7kv7s]
Did you have any prior college credits upon admission or did you "start from scratch"?
If you're starting from scratch with zero college credits, then it will take you a looooooong time, especially if you're working full-time. There are some colleges that will let you "test out" of some classes. That means that all you have to do is take a test and if you pass it, then you get full credit for having taken the entire class. Just buy a study guide and prep for it before you take the test. Colleges that do this by "distance learning" include Thomas Edison State College (http://www.tesc.edu/), Excelsior College (https://www.excelsior.edu/) and Charter Oak State College (http://www.charteroak.edu/). If you start "testing out" of classes, then you can get a degree pretty quick, even if you're starting from scratch. If you can pass the test, then why sit through 20 weeks of lecture? ;)

Bachelors in Police Science from George Washington University .... this degree choice is ok, but this college will only let you take the core classes with them. After those classes are completed with GWU you have to take the General classes with another college.
IMO Hodges University is probably the best way to go because they:
- Accommodate us
- If we miss a class, they offer 2 more days with the same class
- Accelerated degree completion
- 30% (?) off for cops
- Good off-site locations: Bradenton MCC & NPPD
- Grant money from the State of Florida for their wheels/semesters (you don't have to pay it back because it's not a loan).

All these online classes are good, but they are harder than the in-resident classes. People don't know that until they actually sign up for one. It's almost like the college/university is making up for the convenience of being online by make it a lot harder.

This thread about Hodges University is moved from the public forum to this education thread:
As of May 15, 2007, International College was given a very generous gift from the Hodges family. In conjunction with the gift, IC changed its name to Hodges University. The gift allows the institution to go from college to university status and continue to serve the Southwest region of Florida.

How much does the sso pay deputies for a college degree? associates, bachleors, masters, etc...? SSO will pay 50% of tuition, regardless of cost. However, there is a cap of $2500 per year.
[/*:m:12izh086]
SSO will only pay tuition for one associates, one bachelors and one masters degree. Choose each degree carefully because SSO won't get you a second one!!!! Mike Pelfrey got the department to help with tuition reimbursement for two different masters degrees, but that was before the general order was changed and they won't do that anymore!!! You'll notice that this is a cop forum for full-time officers who have full-time jobs who can't quit to go to school. The online format is perfect for working professionals. Some of us didn't have a silver spoon stuck in our mouth. I didn't have a mommy or a daddy to send me away to college to get a degree.

And by the way 13th grade or MCC does not count.
It amazes me that people "put down" community colleges. College algebra is the same at USF and MCC, except MCC is less expensive. ;)

I'm most definately pro-college, but this demonstrates that memory can never replace good judgment. We can't pay enough money for good candidates who have good judgment. Sometimes we don't know what we're getting in the hiring process until they hit the FTO program. That's where the rubber meets the road. Having a good memory doesn't outweigh good judgment.

Confessed serial killer had law enforcement degree
Missouri (AP) -- In his early 30s, fresh off his release from prison on rape charges, Timothy Krajcir enrolled in college to study psychology and the criminal justice system.

Like other students, Krajcir was seeking self-enlightenment, a detective said.

But over the next six years, Krajcir murdered at least six women in two states, covering up his crimes in part by using what he learned at Southern Illinois University.

Krajcir, now 63, confessed to nine murders...

Legitimacy of sheriff candidate's degree is questioned
The discussion over diploma mills is having an impact on the Mahoning County sheriff’s race in Ohio.

Ohio Sheriff Randall Wellington filed a protest against David Aey, a former deputy sheriff and challenger, claiming Aey isn’t eligible to run because Ohio state law requires sheriff candidates to have at least two years of post-secondary education from an accredited college or university.

Aey received an associate degree in criminal justice administration last year from Belford University. The online school advertises on its Web site (belforduniversity.org) that a person can add degrees to their résumé in just seven days.

When told of Aey’s comments, Dr. John Bear laughed. Bear, who has been used as a consultant by the FBI to help close down diploma mills, said “Anyone with a two-digit IQ could see this is a fake university by its Web site. You’d be an idiot to not know this is fake. You’ve almost got to feel sorry for the guy. It’s like robbing a bank and stealing $3.”

The problem is...

America's Most Overrated Product: Higher Education
College students with weak high school records usually drop out, having learned little, and with devastated self-esteem, a mountain of debt, and a job they could have obtained without college. Amazingly, many good students don’t do much better.
Among my saddest moments as a career counselor is when I hear a story like this: “I wasn’t a good student in high school but I wanted to prove that I can get a college diploma--I’d be the first one in my family to do it. But it’s been five years and $80,000 and I still have 45 units to go.”

Weak in High School; Weaker in College

I have a hard time telling such people the killer statistic: According to the U.S. Department of Education, despite colleges having dumbed-down classes to accommodate to the weak students, among college freshmen who graduated in the bottom 40 percent of their high school class, 76 of 100 won’t earn a diploma, even if...

The Case Against Grad School
The more education you have, the more money you'll make–right?

Well, that's what graduate school administrators would like you to believe. But the truth is, it varies with the individual. The question is whether grad school is right for you.

In my 20 years as a career coach, I've listened to many people who spent years and mortgaged their financial futures to get a graduate degree, only to find themselves earning far less than they expected. Some struggle just to repay backbreaking student loans.

There are good reasons to attend grad school–it may be the only way to get the credentials or knowledge you need. But there are poor reasons, too. If you're motivated by any of these, think twice:

I went 14k into debt to finish a Bachelors degree, so it's highly unlikely that I'll go to graduate school. Also, in law enforcement, a graduate degree won't help me to "get ahead" at the SSO. Everything that you need is in a Bachelors degree. Then there's the debate about getting a degree in Criminal Justice or some other degree that can make you money when you leave law enforcement.

Anyways, I don't think that it's cost-effective for a cop to get a graduate degree -- in most cases, but certainly not in all cases. If you just HAVE to get a graduate degree, then do it in something that can make you MONEY when you leave law enforcement!

Reference going into debt to get a Bachelors degree -- if I had to do it over again, would I? YES!!! You can never take that sheepskin away from me! ;)

Still paying off my college debt...
