Deputy Sues To Learn Identity Of LeoAffairs Poster
BRADENTON, FLA---Leoaffairs.com, the controversial forum where law enforcement officers discuss their departments, is back in the news again, this time being sued by a Manatee County sheriff?s deputy who says she was the target of sex-related gossip.
Kumiko Carter who has been a deputy for about 15 years, brought suit against ?Jane Doe? who she says posted false statements about her on the website that brought her into ?public scandal and disgrace?.
Posters are allowed to post comments anonymously and she wants the site owners, retired Tampa police officers Jim Preston and Chip LaBlock, to reveal the IP number of the computer or location of where the comments were posted.
Last year, mad about postings criticizing themselves and the operations of the Hillsborough County Sheriff?s office, a lawsuit was filed against ?John Does? who sheriffs? officials claimed were Hillsborough deputies. They asked a judge for an injunction to stop anonymous deputies from posting messages on LeoAffairs.
The site, which debuted in 2002, has 50 message board for law enforcement agencies across the country. Among the most active boards are those involving the Pinellas and Pasco Sheriff?s offices as well as the Hillsborough Sheriff?s Office.
Hillsborough Sheriff David Gee lost his lawsuit when the judge ruled that the posters were constitutionally protected by the First Amendment but ruled that racist and sexist messages be removed from the site. 3-08-06
