New JAC for Central County?
The Sarasota County Commission looked for possible sites for a new Juvenile Assessment Center, which is also known as a JAC unit in law enforcement circles. A mid-county alternative was ultimately settled upon as staff was directed to look for appropriate, county-owned land, possibly in the Venice area.

According to James Schulz, the criminal justice policy coordinator, the county has been looking for appropriate county-owned land to place a temporary structure for providing community-operated programs providing intake and screening services for troubled youth.

Follow-up story:
Sarasota's old JAC Center, once housed in the county jail by the courthouse downtown, was closed down Oct. 1 in compliance with a state law, the Martin Lee Anderson Act, named for a youth killed by poorly trained officers in a detention center boot camp. As a result, juvenile arrests fell quickly by 50 percent or more for the first few months after the JAC closed.

Police officers and sheriff's deputies are just far less willing to make an arrest.

Sarasota County commissioners learned officially Tuesday morning what many of them have known privately for a while: Too often young offenders aren't being arrested, and therefore don't receive help in substance abuse, mental health or behavioral programs until they become adults or commit serious offenses - when it may be too late.

The reason: Sarasota County today has no JAC facility to evaluate juvenile offenders and determine whether to jail...

give a brother a beat down and this is what happens.
The black male juvenile died while in the custody of correctional officers and the state legislators over reacted -- and that's why our JACs were closed all around the state of Florida. It was a knee-jerk reaction, which means we now have a 50% reduction in juvenile arrests in Sarasota County.

We must now make sure that the pencil pushers and bean counters don't jump on the STARCRAP statistics and tout the reduction in arrests as a REDUCTION in juvenile crime. That would really be good for Bumbling Billy to say that his efforts have resulted in such a huge decrease in crime and use that to get him re-elected.

I have to admit that I've been less inclined to arrest juveniles since Oct, however the other day I had to bring one downtown. I was impressed with how quickly the jail got us through. A quick picture and prints and we were done in minutes. I called the parent ahead of time and had them waiting for me in the lobby. Thanks to everyone in the jail for helping us get the juveniles in and out quickly. We appreciate your efforts with that :D

Based on his ability to plan for the future, we should have a site picked out in 15 years. He hasn't even been able to secure a site for the jail yet.
When Venice finally takes over the rest of their building, We will be driving every Tom, **** and Harry to North County. How hard can it be without waiting until everything get's developed, and then trying to find a site where the "surrounding developments" don't object. They weren't there if he would have chosen it when he should have. He needs to
hire Terry Lewis as a consultant and ask"what would you do?"
DO IT NOW!

THE NEW TOWN REC CENTER WOULD BE A GREAT PLACE FOR A JAC CENTER.

Unbelievable as it may seem, there are no longer any provisions to deal with juvenile lawbreakers in Sarasota County.

Set new reforms on juvenile system so that abuse of power is not to be used and not to wait for the teen to be at his/her legal age to arrest. It is really too late to give the teen the chance to change. This is not a good reform that were looking for. It seems this is a crap one.

The abuse of power in a country can not be tolerated and when it comes to Juvenile detention, new regulation should be updated in favor of youth. We all want young generation to be on right track but once a youngster get abused or hurt, it impact on his/her entire life.
