Union

Postby For the Better » 03/06/12 00:59:31

From MSO and we are trying like crazy to become unionized. Everyone is in fear of signing the ticket. We know the typical not on duty, etc.
Any tips on how you folks got it done, any suggestions, etc., would be greatly appreciated. We are looking for both Enforcement and Corrections.

Why would you want to go Union? They do NOTHING for us.

^^^^This from someone who has done no lifting whatsoever, much less heavy lifting, as far as the union goes. So easy to sit in the bleachers and criticize while others struggle against the tide. But I'm sure this punk has done it all his life.^^^^

If my memory serves me correctly, we just had everybody sign the cards. You have to get a certain percentage to authorize PERC to take a department-wide vote. Getting the cards signed is the most important part. If you get enough signatures, then PERC will come into your department and will hold an official vote to see if the employees want to unionize.

It's a two step process:
1. Get the employees to sign the cards. It has to be 25% or something like that.
2. Then PERC will come in and will hold an official vote to see if the employees want to unionize.
2 step process

Unfortunately you have to come to this disgruntled employee board. The less than 1 percent on here who actually enjoy our job. Then again Im sure your agency has them also. We just signed cards. It has been a great thing and I am so glad we did. I can not say enough good about the PBA. Just ask the Rep that is doing your contract proposal. Their are way to many counties in Florida that have done this. Our Sheriff has no ill feelings. He undersatands it is just a voice for the deputies. Good luck

I totally agree that unionization is a good thing. Every unit and section should be unionized, to include sworn AND non-sworn.

I wish someone would actually say what exactly the union has done here.

You have to be a noob to ask that question. And if you are not, the better question is IF you filled out a card in support of joining the union, WHAT have you done since then to support the union. And sitting on the sideline and whining is not support.

SSO employees have spoken at the voting booth and voted the union in. It's the American way. We get what we want. Thank you. :)

Ok lets see I remember the Car out of county issue authorizing driving back into county, step raises expanded, OT is authroized now if you have vacation in that pay period. Thats just three off the top off my head.

Im sure a PBA rep can give you more. Get off your soap box. The Union is a huge part of us and I am glad it is here.

The union needs to address the progressive discipline crap, but management will fight that one to the death. It's terrible. It will take at least 10 years before management gives some ground on that one (the current administration never will).
