Enforce policy

Postby Guest » 01/29/12 19:04:38

10 fatals and a story you will know will be national news. Yet Troopers still won't wear their hats despite all the media around. Our department is screwed up for so many reasons, but one of them is Troopers doing whatever they want. I guess policy doesn't apply to all.

Are you serious?

Do you really think wearing a hat is going to make things all better?

Wow, just wow.

But, of course. That is, "why" we have this policy. With out it we would have anarchy. :|

I see the guy's point, they used to really stress the hats and when you had media around you reached into the car and popped your cover on for a while. Old timers still do it. When I was young, they really stressed how you looked and I was sort of proud of the hat, I didn't wear it all of the time but I knew when to have it on. They didn't ride out butts about it, but we all knew that we had better not be on the news or in the paper or courthouse without it. I guess things have changed.........To the person posting this statement in the first place, I agree with you 100%. They shouldn't get in trouble, but they should look be in uniform when they are being photographed at the very least.

Are you frickin kidding me?? They're working a large pileup with at least 10 fatalities, numerous other injuries and you're complaining that a couple of troopers aren't wearing their hats?? You need to get your priorities in order son. If you even have any time under a hat, you would know that when you're working in an environment like that and are processing the scene, you are constantly bending down and/or kneeling to examine marks, examine vehicles, take photos, retrieve evidence and property, marking the scene etc. Wearing the hat is just not practical in that situation. If all you're doing is standing around trying to look good for the media, then yes, maybe you can wear the hat. Also, it could have been a windy day. I've had the hat blow completely off my head during gusty days or when a semi drives by and then I get to chase my hat down the shoulder while on a traffic stop. I'll wear the hat when I want and I'll not wear the hat when I feel its not practical.

I will be happy to wear my hat just as soon as the white car troopers start working weekends, holidays and midnights just like I do.

Come on, this is FHP. Traffic crashes, UTC's and wearing the HAT!! Sounds like you need to go to a SO or PD.

Typical Trooper excuse. There is a policy in place to wear your hat. I am the original poster of this thread and I continue to be amazed by how much this department has deteriorated since I started.

All that stuff you put in your response, I have been there and done that too. I wore my hat the entire time, because that is what policy says.

This hat issue is just a symbolic example of all the problems we have. Small stuff like the lack of compliance to a simple policy simply paves the way for the big policy violations. I was waiting for a press conference with someone wearing hoop earrings.

I agree completely. The dissenters are the same ones who want this to be a "hip hop, be what you want to be, do what you want to do" kinda highway patrol. "I should be able to go without wearing my hat if I want to and I should be able to have tattoos all over my body including my eyelids if I want to and I should be able to wear what ever I want to on my uniform if I want to and I should be able to put what ever kind of decal or plate on my patrol car if I want to and blaaa blaaa blaaa blaaa..." Bull sh*t! Any excuse to keep from doing what you're supposed to do and then try to justify it. This "pay issue" and comments like an above poster ("Who cares. We have bigger problems.) are just excuses to try to justify why you refuse to do something the policy manual says you are supposed to do. DO YOU REALLY THINK NOT WEARING YOUR HAT AT A SIGNIFCANT NATIONAL MEDIA EVENT WILL DRAW ATTENTION TO THE PLIGHT OF OUR PAY ISSUE? DO YOU REALLY THINK WEARING YOUR HAT AT A SIGNIFICANT NATIONAL MEDIA EVENT WILL ENDANGER YOUR LIFE? If it has become THAT difficult for you to continue to comply with the policy manual and do what is expected of you as a state trooper then the "pay issue" was never really the reason in the first place; the requirements and expectations of the job are just too difficult for you. Admit it and move on, but don't try to change the FHP: if you choose to stay try to change yourself!

A rare and uncommon scene....I don't think the dead and injured really care about hats or even shirts for that matter. Screw the media.
Speaking of hats, bring back the Stetsons.

Why don't you worry about following the policy in your cubicle in "the building" where your biggest worry is a paper cut and let the rest of us worry about applying it to real life situations. By the response that you gave, I can guarantee you have gold on your shoulder and rather than acknowledge the real problems facing the patrol, you bury your head in the sand and complain about people not wearing their hat. Thank you for your input Captain Paper Cut but you probably need to get back to your job: remember the Colonel likes two sugars and one cream in his coffee.
