EVERYONE'S A T.H.I.

Postby Guest » 10/22/11 13:01:54

CAPE CANAVERAL (AP) --
Florida's top highway safety official wants to put more troopers who specialize in investigating highway fatalities out on the road.

Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Director Julie Jones told members of the Florida Cabinet Tuesday that she wants to train all troopers on how to investigate simple fatalities that involve a single car, such as when a car crashes into a tree.

Jones says that will save time by allowing a trooper who responds to an accident to begin an investigation immediately, rather than wait for an investigator.

Jones says the current class at the academy is being trained to investigate simple fatalities. Starting in February, current troopers will start attending a special school to get the extra training on investigating accidents.

Aweeeesome, I wanted to be a THI I think I would have applied for the position long time ago. I'm not good in math, neither like to use calculators with square roots. I hope FHP will put plenty of $ aside for the lawsuits when I screw up a fatal crash. Now more than ever, I advise everyone to join PBA, you are going to need their legal help.

So if the current class is undergoing instruction about how to conduct a investigation into a simple fatality...what are they cutting out to make room for that time period?

Secondly, I shudder to think of some of the troopers that will now be in charge of THI scenes. Shudder. The idea has merit, but doesn't function well when it will hit the road

I agree with you on the second issue--We have enough Troopers that can't investigate a simple crash so if this goes through the State needs to get ready for the lawsuits that are going to start flying into the Clerk's Offices--and not just the ones against the State for negligent supervision/negligent training but the lawsuits between the parties that are going to stem from the inevitable screw-ups along the way.
But as for the "cutting out"--there is plenty to cut and still have room for this idiotic idea. Our academy is still significantly longer than the local Criminal Justice Academies

So does that mean we will all get a 15% pay increase also?

V01, was traveling north at a high rate of speed. V01 drove off the roadway and struck a tree. The driver of V01 was pronounced deceased at the scene from head trauma or heart failure or some other reason pending results from autopsy.

No photos were taken due to investigator not having a camera. No digital recordings from the witnesses due to investigator did not have a recording device.

The estimated speed of V01 was really fast, unknown if vehicle had any braking, and unknown if lights were on prior to impact.

This trooper had to clear scene due to several hit and run parking lot crashes holding at the local mall.

Exactly, Julie Jones has no idea of what she is talking about. Her intention is to destroy FHP as much as she can like when she was the Director of FWC. Brierton is just letting her do it, I tell you, as a THI I can see plenty of homicides going down the toilet. I think the deceased family deserves better than just a crash report from a Trooper which is being forced to do it. THI is for special people, that is just like forcing a street patrol cop to conduct an investigation involving a serious murder case. The State is going to bite their arse when the lawsuits come in, just to save a few bucks. 10-65 S7 single vehicle rolled over, 10-97 he is dead send me a x70 x98. S14 we we have 4 more s4 holding and a DAV you need to clear that s7.

Due to recent cutbacks, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.

Memo to Corporals. Time to start planning how to milk the few THI's you will now be holding, to further avoid being assigned to a zone every day. Look for THI reports to suddenly start taking MORE time to complete than ever before :?:

This was not Julie Jones' idea. This is phase 2 of the colonels plan to gut THI to 30 Cpls. statewide that only investigate what is thought to be a criminal case...we will become even more of a laughingstock as we ruin one of the fields we were actually pretty good at and most other departments wanted us to investigate in their jurisdictions...Troopers don't even measure crash scenes anymore. Here they cant get measuring wheels if they wanted to....send them out with no tools to conduct a death investigation. This is just ridiculous.

We seem to have arrived to the point where FHP will now have troopers just check the box fatal on crash reports and call it a day.

Brierton has never been a fan of THI and he is just continuing the dismantling of the THI program that was started by Chris Knight when he was director as he to was no fan of the THI program.

Careful there. That is a pretty far stretch. Some people within THI seem to think they are homicide detectives. They are not!

Sad but true..... Have you seen some of the short forms our guys and gals write? Some can barely articulate V-1 hit V-2. What if that was your family member killed in a crash, would you want it to be called a "simple fatality"?

From what I hear, Burchnell and Riggio want none of it, Duarte is the one pushing all this mess. After all, he was a THI (not) so understands how this will ruin the THI program.
