A Fort Myers Police Officer was fired after an August crash after which the officer lied about knowing what happened to his cruiser.
Officer Lucas Benton, who had been with the department since February 2009, was terminated Oct. 1, according to a report released today.
A Professional Compliance Investigation details how Benton crashed into a yellow pole in a parking lot during an early August shift. When he reported the damage, investigators said he denied knowledge of how it happened and said it must have been caused by someone else. But no one else had driven the cruiser. A traffic investigator reported the impact would have been such that Benton would have heard and felt the damage.
Benton later admitted to crashing the vehicle, damaging the wheel well and causing yellow paint lines scraped across the rear driver door and wheel well.
An accusation of untruthfulness was found sustained, and he was fired.
Benton’s salary was $38,500.
