Stop it
This has already occurred with a white officer, and he received the suspension. So there’s nothing hypocritical about it. We don’t just shit can somebody over words. Again what was the intent here? Forget what society dictates because right now society is all ****ed up in the head. It blows my mind that you can’t even see the big picture. God forbid you ever make a mistake, karma might slap you upside the head. Remedial training and suspension. If it happens again then you can easily justify firing him. No one called for the white officer to be arrested. This is no different.

60 day suspension and put back in patrol with no chance of going to any type of specialty squad for a minimum of three years and some type of racial / sensitivity training would have sent Delvin a strong message. The community would accept that with some thinking it’s too harsh. It would also show the black community that Dugan is somewhat in touch with and understands life in the hood.

The bottom line is this language is inappropriate for a police officer regardless of what you were brought up speaking. We are supposed to be above that type of language regardless of where you were brought up. Will we be justifying systemic racism from the white officers that were raised during those times in that type of climate? Oh that is right, the community is already up in arms about white people supposedly acting that way

That type of punishment would definitely make Delvin to get his sh1t together. The black community would accept it and possibly feel that the Police Department cares more about their overall plight. The Chief missed the opportunity to use this situation as a teachable moment.

Yes
100% agree. Maybe the Chief will put together another useless committee and waste more time. He blew an opportunity here to show empathy and a sense of touch with reality. Hey chief, you still think those little black kids running around Robles or calling Calvin their daddy?

(Not so) Wise
This is where the discussion actually needs to be, the extensive and large scale “fishing expeditions” being undertaken by the BWC unit and their former IA detective leader who refers more cases to IA than anyone else. Cases where officers acted lawfully and within policy, but she deemed that good officers need the stigma and problems that come with being dragged through an IA investigation. If it’s a legit problem or violation yes, absolutely address or refer it because 1) it’s the right thing to do and 2) the videos are time stamped that you watched it and you could are on the hook for not reporting a real violation. The word is that she is referring things that are not worthy of IA follow up but they have to act on it.
As far as the Delvin situation, it’s actually really simple. When we put that uniform on we are no longer black, white, brown or any other color people. We are all blue. Period. We are identified by each other and the citizens as the police. It’s why we are called “nazis” or “crackas” if we are white, “uncle Toms” or “house N***” if we’re black and “dykes” if we are female. Everyone wearing that badge is the same and as such has to speak and carry themselves professionally at all times. Ghetto Ass N*** may be fine when your mopping the floor at Popeyes or Salem’s Gyros, but isn’t going to work out for anyone wearing a police uniform, especially when you’re wearing a camera on your chest. If he is that unprofessional wearing a body cam while making an arrest, imagine the stuff he has said and done for years while wearing that uniform without a camera. I say good riddance, you had a good run, now go find a job where you can act and speak like a trashy “ghetto-ass” thug which, by your own admission, is how “you’re people” treat each other.
We need to remember, we are only seen as THE POLICE by everyone when we are on the clock or wearing that badge. After that, then we can be whatever you want to “identify” as, but at work we should all “identify” as Tampa Police Officers. Although our own department has for years tried to segregate and define us by our race, color and our sexual orientation, we need to look past that and realize we have to be held accountable and judged by the same standard. The chief actually got this one right, he just doesn’t really know how to articulate and explain it.

I support him
No, it’s you. Many cops support him. They don’t condone that language but, being terminated is too harsh. Give the man a chance. He will have the support of the community as well. The Chief ran his mouth about AM, and looked at what happened? He got his job back. Good ole Jane tried to throw a current LT under the bus, and look what happened, he got his job back. Yes, two different scenarios, however, they got their jobs back. Don’t act like you never said anything about anyone when the camera was not rolling. One thing is for sure, the staff always steps on their ****s with shitty investigations and a lack of knowledge of policy and contracts.
