Homosexuality Legalized in Sarasota County

SARASOTA COUNTY - The Sarasota County Commission approved a domestic partnership registry and passed the ordinance.

Thomas Logie said it treats a domestic partnership like a marriage.

Partners will be able to visit each other in the Sarasota County jail, make health care and funeral decisions for one another, and receive notification if their partner is in an emergency.

Advocates said there is still work to be done to guarantee equal treatment of gay couples by creating a human rights ordinance.

The County Commission will discuss such an ordinance next year, said County Attorney Stephen DeMarsh.
