The police department will soon be history in Belle Glade.

City leaders voted to enter into negotiations with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office to take over the police department.

Dozens packed city hall for a meeting to hear both sides of whether to hand over control of the police department to the sheriff's office.

This is something that had been talked about for about two years.

It recently gained momentum after a scathing report from a grand jury saying there were a number of deficiencies in a police investigation of a shooting.

The police chief, who was suspended after that report, was at the meeting as was the interim chief.

They were among the many eager to hear what would happen to the future of the police department.

After more than an hour of discussion, city commissioners voted to enter negotiations with the sheriff's department regarding a takeover.

They also voted there would be public discussion during this process.

Suspended police chief Albert Dowdell had no comment after the vote, saying only "God is Great."

A hearing will take place Thursday to determine if both men will keep their jobs.
