    Calea

Wow! So fancy! Looks like even more work for us with still no plan to fix how short handed we are.

Does CALEA demand minimum deputies on the street? If it does, how will the agency fudge the number to make us look fully staffed? Only deputies logged into an MDT and X8 for calls, investigations, arrests, reports, crashes, baker acts, reports, court, convictions, and being true first responders in actual danger should be a part of the count. Not desk jockeys.

Greater accountability alone sounds like a plus to me.

    Because of Academy

We are primarily going back into CALEA because of wanting to completely run our own academy training. Till now, we have been using the HCC Academy for all recruit hires for general certification. The goal is to completely do our own academy in-house from start to finish. To accomplish that, FDLE requires compliance with standards that parallel CALEA.

By running our own academy it will shorten or eliminate any "modular" time needed post-academy to teach report writing, use of force policy etc. because instead of generic academy curriculum, we can teach the HCSO requirements during those blocks of instruction within the academy.

And hopefully, by doing so, churn out trained recruits faster and replenish the patrol squads!

Agreed! But it will be accountability for us towards the citizens. The for the agency to us.

This is great news but it is misleading. This implies the only reason we are short is because how long training takes. Not true. We are losing deputies faster than ever. Also, what about all the non patrol non first responders deputy positions we have? Positions that should be done away with. Getting a faster, stronger, or dual, bilge pumps on a boat does not fix the leaking hole. Patch hole. That’s the correct fix. We are bleeding deputies faster than ever. How about plug the leak and get rid of non essential deputy positions. Long ago, FTO squads would receive 8, 9, 10, even 12 recruits back to back to back. Long before CALEA. And even long before we had a full time dedicated training unit. It’s really all about $$$. Accreditation means more federal money. Keeping us short intentionally means less spent on staffing. You do the math.

It’s quite simple. Everyone that knows even the most basics in business understands that staffing is where the majority of the money goes. I do not believe in a million years that we are short for any set of reasons. I believe it is intentional. It easy to make hiring guidelines too strict and academy expectations barely unattainable to keep us short but hidden behind reason that can be justified. Gee and Docobo did this. I don’t think it’s that bad now but still going on to a certain degree. SOT was not necessary and I’m glad it’s gone. It washed too many out and made us critically shorthanded. This job is not rocket science. We deal with the defective and crazy. The county is basically an external mental hospital with cops as the orderlies. Much much cheaper for the state and counties. Then we can get blamed when one of these crazy scum go on a killing spree. You don’t need an insane amount of training for punching bag scapegoats like we are. What we need is a lot more of us to at least thin out the exposure and give us the opportunity to make it to retirement. I know this is a crazy insane concept to grasp when it’s all about getting the biggest county budget possible but we are human beings. Agency leaders need to actually lead instead of thinking that a ton of training will give them these perfect specimens that require no maintenance. We are people and can only be exposed to so much. Besides nothing is clear anymore anyway. Nobody really knows what to do anyway unless it’s a shoplift or domestic. So many flavors of the month and policy changes, JAAP, APD, NTA, it’s gotten beyond stupid.

    Rights violations

Does Calea look at the law suits pending against this of office for our own violating citizens and deputies' rights?

Has our office been transparent about those pending law suits ?
