Yeah, that doesn't work. We get paid well for what we know and the skills we have. How many don't make it through the hiring process? How many people don't make it through the academy? How many people don't make it through their phases? How many people would quit after their first decomp, first child drowning, first real fight with a subject, first time hearing gunshots directed at you, first time missing Christmas morning, first time missing a birthday/holiday. The civilians on here, and in the public, say they could do it all and we get paid too much. Yet most would be whining the first time they had to work the whole weekend or every holiday. The rest would be throwing up in the corner or crying at the sight of a decapitated body.
If you're a slug hiding under a tree, that's on you. Now if your laziness is impacting my workload, then the sgt (who is getting paid more) is responsible for dealing with it. The sgt's by the way should be getting paid more to incentivize those with time on to take the test. When everyone on the squad has stats and that person doesn't the flags should go up. They need to be put on a performance plan and dealt with accordingly.
I agree with increased pay for specialized units, ones that require a true special skill and abilities, i.e.
SRT (that class is nuts)
K9 (not everyone likes dogs, allergies and the physical aspect)
Motors (make it through motors school without hurting yourself, endorsement)
Marine patrol (motion sickness, captains license)
Bomb squad (special training, risk)
Divers (I'd rather not rely on a tank to breath)
Aviation (license and motion sickness).
Places like those should be a 15-20% pay increase. Not only will the amount of applicants increase, so should quality.
As for everyone else hiding under a tree vs. those hustling, you can't reward productivity financially. If court OT isn't enough to get him/her from under a tree, then nothing will. The road isn't a socialist system, because there is still a reward for working, that is interviewing and getting a better position.
As for the desk jockeys, no hazard pay. Armory, off-duty coordinators, CAU, special events, admin positions, all these spots should be civilians or sworn in plain clothes and give them unmarks to go back and forth to work. Even the person hiding under the tree has a greater likelihood of being ambushed or hurt than the ones locked in a building.
I do agree with a pay differential for working a district that is busier (based on verified statistics not cause you think it is), 15% for afternoons and 20% for mids for all districts. Complain all you want, being on afternoons with school age children means you don't see them. Working mids traumatizes your body through horrible sleep patterns, social life and often nutrition. Even Tuesday Wednesday days, is still sleeping normal, eating dinner with the family every night, sleeping with your spouse every night.
So to conclude, a pay raise across the board helps offset inflation for everyone. If more money wasn't needed to function and survive, why do my property taxes keep going up? Any big increase looks bad at first, till you realize that it doesn't coincide with CPI. My property taxes have gone up 9% in the last 4 years, so the county needed more money, why doesn't it's employees?

Very well said and articulated, thank you. The only stipulation I would have is that you can’t pay officers more that work in busier districts as I believe this would come down to paying officers based on the number of calls they handle. It can’t be based on assaults against officers as each district has had officers shot at while handling calls. Maybe consider re-visiting the 4/10 schedule for busier districts. For this e that remember when the take home car program was implemented it was the busiest districts which were first to go online, cutler ridge and central.
I enjoyed reading your post and great insight. Key takeaway for me was supervision and accountability at all levels.
Stay safe

So what’s going on with this? We were told by it was surely going to be a done deal two or so weekends ago. Here we are still in limbo.

Our expectations may be too high. Asking the PBA, especially Stahl/Greenwell/Jenkins team to get us a proper raise is like asking a pony league kid to hit a major league type fast ball.
Maybe that’s all that they are able achieve. I’m mean for a guy (Steadman) who has had zero accomplishments in the 30 years he spent at the PBA a 2 (bonus) 3-3 makes him look like he invented electricity.

So after 9 pages of this back and forth nothing has changed. They bring us 0-3-3 as was approved by the commission chair weeks ago. The emails promising further negotiations only resulted in a little window dressing. So how shall the masses vote?

If we don’t stand up for ourselves now, we never will. I say vote no and make iba learn how to fight. Make Stahl and Greenwell finally earn their $180k PBA salaries.
The commission knows that the PBA is weak and the are taking advantage of that. It will never get better unless we stand up to them.

PBA sends BS email
Read the email CAREFULLY. A 2% bonus is like a zero for heroes. It’s useless as a brain in Steadmans’ skull. My dad said the only other time a bonus was offered was under a guy named Clifton. Seems that bad PBA Presidents take leads from one another.
If you work warrants you will get 16% raise over the course of the contract. And, how many does that affect- 10-15 maybe?
The rest of us will get 6%. Mind you that would make a total of 7% over 7 years (last contract + plus this one if it passes). And, I guess we should do back flips for the additional $ at 35 years. Wtf is that? How many people even want to work here that long. It’s another useless item.
Miami Gardens get 4%-4%-4% but we are not as good as them I guess.
PBA: learn to fight. Learn to fight or get out. Learn to fight or reimburse us for the $180k PBA salaries you collect.
