The office of elected sheriff is a surreal world where the position has many built-in institutional protections and buffers. However, in a non-profit organization, such as in the position of CEO of First Step of Sarasota, people expected results -- and not just words and promises. Either fulfill the responsibilities of the job or leave. Reality sunk in. First Step has expectations and requirements. Period. Seriously though, if Tom Knight genuinely wants to help other people, then there are many positions that are available where he can do that. Helping others does not have to be as a CEO. Does Knight genuinely want to help other people? Only he can answer that question and it will be demonstrated by his actions -- or lack thereof.
On a personal note, Tom, please make good choices.

As a Sarasota County sheriff, Knight previously had the power to point his finger at others and then blame them for systemic internal and external problems. High paid government employees (deputies) are loyal to the FRS government pension system. That loyalty meant that Knight was not required to confront his inability to lead and inspire government employees. However, as CEO of First Step, Knight’s finger pointing strategy did not work because First Step employees are very different from government employees who settled for Knight’s internal politics, for the sole purpose of holding onto a FRS government pension system. It’s apples and oranges.
- SSO Management Apples: Managing government employees who are loyal exclusively to the FRS pension system – and not to an elected sheriff’s finger-pointing blame-game strategy.
. - First Step Leadership Oranges: Leading highly educated, low paid, pension-less First Step employees who are genuinely trying to help broken people in the community.
Knight’s “Carrot & Stick Trick” didn’t work at First Step because Knight could not threaten to take away a pension from noble First Step employees who are working for peanuts. Look at their salaries if you want proof. Knight’s finger pointing was a powerless magic trick that was ineffective at First Step. The buck stops here.

- Instead of sowing harmony and solidarity inside the SSO, Tom Knight publicly accused American LEOs of being racists.
. - Knight also "took a knee" with Marxist BLM protesters in Sarasota and businesses were vandalized shortly thereafter
Click here for multiple MSM reminders.
Those kinds of publicized political stunts are not a good fit with First Step of Sarasota and unfortunately, the non-profit board learned the hard way. Seeing and experiencing is believing.

With the exception of Sarasota Sheriff Kurt Hoffman, can you name just one (1) current or retired command staff deputy who will privately say something positive about Tom Knight? Nope. How about publicly? That speaks volumes. Is anyone surprised that Knight could not keep a job at First Step? Nope.

In the beginning, it was good for First Step (when Knight was still the Sarasota sheriff) because Knight provided a steady pipeline of new customers (aka inmates) from the jail. Knight’s political and financial clout landed him a job with First Step immediately after he left the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office. However, once Knight was no longer the sheriff, he quickly lost his political sway at the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office, so his political and financial usefulness for First Step quickly evaporated, as is evidenced by Knight’s resignation after only a few months.
