Question Black Box Question (aka Event Data Recorder)

There is a "black box" in almost all vehicles and it captures data seconds before and after a crash i.e. speed, tilt of steering wheel, seat belt usage, etc.

A Florida state court (State v. Worsham) ruled that a warrant is needed to use black box data for a criminal case because the driver has a reasonable expectation of privacy -- and an appeals court upheld the decision.

Question: Can we get in-service training on using the black box for civil cases, criminal cases and when a driver is not the owner of the vehicle?

    Black box

The training, certification, and equipment is very expensive. Our agency has not wanted to go down this path because of that. Other agencies like FHP and FDLE have this ability so we would have to call them.

Doesn't the device that is used to download the information from the black box cost around 21k? That's a way of preventing police agencies and civilians alike (both) from buying the device. Charging that much can't be realistically justified.
