IUPA: New Labor Relations Business Agent

    Hello to all,

Just wanted to introduce myself to this site. My name is Mark Nelson and I am a new Labor Relations Business Agent with IUPA. I am recently retired from a department in Ohio after 30 years. I did road patrol, school officer and lastly the investigations bureau. During my detective years I handled property crimes and sexual crimes, including child pornography. I was also heavily involved in our union and did the positions of steward, trustee, financial secretary and treasurer. I was able to assist in negotiations, disciplinary issues and other matters that became before the executive board.

Our union in Ohio is part of IUPA and the Legal Defense Fund(LDF). I can tell you over all the years I was with my dept and being involved in our union, I learned how valuable it was to have a national union behind you. One that was there to support you in any way you needed. We have lost 3 officers in the line of duty since 2007 and 2 of them in the past 7 months. IUPA stepped up immediately and sent monetary contributions to the families. But that is only one of the many things IUPA does to help.

I am here to not only help IUPA's Locals, but to organize new Locals. My main focus will be on the west coast of Florida, but I am willing to travel to other areas as well if needed. If you and your fellow officers don't like the group who is currently representing you or just want to see what else is out there, I would be more than happy to talk with you. No pressure, I just want the opportunity to give you the facts on what IUPA can do for you and your group. I truly believe IUPA is the best of the best out there to be the Voice of Law Enforcement, only because I have lived it. Now I am lucky enough to be a part of it and help out my fellow officers nationwide and not just like I did in my old union.

Feel free to contact me at markn@iupa.org or 941-487-2560 ext. 184. Thank you, stay safe and stay healthy.
    Mark

    Possible repercussions?

    Very interested

    Mark,

We are not currently represented by any PERC, although it has been talked about by some officers in my department. I don’t think we have much information on what a PERC could do for us or how it could be formed. I have heard that it only takes ten percent of the total officers to hold a vote on whether or not we form it. Any information on the topic would be of interest, especially in the current operating environment.

    Yours Truly,

    PCPD Veteran Officer

    Hello,

Thank you for responding. So it works by having your officers fill out Interest Cards. PERC requires 30% or more of your officers to fill them out. IUPA would then send those cards to PERC and request a vote. Once PERC allows an election, 50% of your officers plus 1 in favor of IUPA is needed to certify IUPA as your collective bargaining union.

IUPA provides their full service Locals with an attorney who helps with contract negotiations, discipline issues and other legal issues. We have departments in legislative, research and public information all at your disposal to help your Local. We also have the Legal Defense Fund which provides legal help during a Critical Incident 24/7/365. You also have access to thousands of dollars in money saving benefits.

There is so much more I can show you and your group. I am more than willing to come do presentations for all of you. I can do them at different times so all your shifts have an opportunity to see it. All I would need is a place to do the presentation. Can be a hotel meeting room or any place you all feel comfortable coming to. I truly believe you and your group would be impressed with all IUPA can offer. Not only protection, but a Voice to get you the best benefits. On top of all of that, your Local is yours to run. IUPA provides you with the training to get up and running, but it is all yours. We are there then to provide the support you need. Hope to talk to you soon.

    Stay safe,
    Mark
