Remember, the $1800 is reduced by the FRS and Dade County addition to your retirement pay. The cost comes out to about $1500 afterwards.

Because health care costs in this country are out of control since we allow it to be run by for-profit companies. By the time anyone retires, they are well
Into their 50s and 60s and have children and spouse. This is considered a high-risk category for these insurance scum, and without an employee- sponsored healthcare pool to balance out the risk, the individual is left taking on that risk all alone. That’s why it was so important for as many people as possible to have enrolled in the ACA and for Florida to expand Medicare to include millions more. They’d be covered, and risk would have been spread out over millions of insured. By the way, the prices will only increase. Keep voting for Republican scumbags and see where it gets you.

Besides all that, the county has been using the “insurance fund” as a slush fund. They have been claiming they need so much for reserves. Then they exceed the reserves and use the money for whatever they wish.
In short, we are subsidizing the county budget. I recall that their was a previous claim that their actions could be determined as an illegal taxation on employees. If it’s true then an audit needs to be done so legal action can be taken. The problem is the county won’t do an audit on themselves. The PBA has to put big boy pants on and audit the insurance fund account. Then keep the big boy pants on and take legal action.
Maybe, now that Jen Moon is not working for the Mayors office she can be of some help.

Fire doesn’t get special treatment ... we just allow our leadership (whether PBA or department brass) to treat us like shit... one day we have to realize that the only weapon silver badges have against the system, the only way we get back at leadership for throwing under the bus constantly is by not doing proactive work, put them on the spot, police is being trashed.... and it’s not everywhere, it’s only where it’s allowed.... force the mayor to fire Freddie, put the next one in, not good ? Force them to fire him or her too.... but we love to kiss the boot that kicks us.... stand up, sometimes that means standing down, and vote, get involved ...

Well said. Let’s look at the PBA leadership. We have 1 capt and 2 Lts, I Lt soon to be capt. we have 2 sgts (yes I know Greenwell came back as a silver badge but he has that Sgt mentality. And, if that ain’t bad enough two retirees, none of which have done anything in their careers. We pay for all their high PBA salaries.
There are NO silver badges - No true silver badges- at the head table helping make decisions for silver badges.
Maybe, the answer is bifurcate the units like in the northeast. Silver badge union. Sgt union and so on.
As long as we continue down this same path us silver badges ain’t getting crap. And selfies is crap in my book.

It is not about rank!
No matter what rank you are, when you retire you are just a retiree. All PBA board will someday be retired. It is in their best interest to fix this mess that is the retiree health care costs. If it is $1,500 or $1,800 it is still way too much. Steadman please fix this.
