I'm sure Ortiz being ROD is missing a lot of incentive pay like gun, clothing and cell phone allowance. Not including the 15% hazardous pay.

Majors I believe they get free health insurance and able to use their city vehicle anywhere in the state of Florida with free gas. In addition they get the uniform clothing allowance, free cell and health insurance

There are different ways. If you suck the left nut then transitioning to the right one which it takes skills, you are on a 90% chance. If you finish with a nice deep back throat shoving then you in the high 90’s.

Tough question cause it's an appointed staff position picked by the Chief and City Manager. at the direction if Cimmissioners.
Civil service requires an exam for the ranks of Sgt, Lt, and Capt. Each rank is an additional 15% raise.
If you go through the rank structures and every promotional exam is given every two years (which Never happens) could take you 10-15.

Now you can just be an officer and get appointed to any staff position up to chief of police. Their Salary is up to the chief and with the approval of the city manager.

Generally, if a rank is skipped to appointment there is a set start pay. Back in the 80's, if a Sgt went to Major, they got around a 10-15% pay raise. They did get the staff benefits. Appointments here are not based off experience (it plays a little) but F&F rule, sexing is the easiest way to special units, appointments and high end salary posting like NM had. Many times those appointed don't have the hands on experience needed but get carried. Race plays a big part in promotions, most of the time, the best get passed over to fill quotas. It shouldn't be that way, cause they are doing a disserved to the others and community. It's the way of life here and the #1 rule. Me, I don't care what your race is, who you know or blow but back your people and remember we've all made mistakes (even you) so punish accordingly. Once you cover for someone, even if it's only a ripe. Your headed down a path of losing it all. Now, I'm not saying be a ball buster and nick pick, everything those your responsible for. Be fair, firm and understanding. Working in any unit, within a few day's you know, the trouble makers and who you need to give some extra attention too. Working in law enforcement takes a toll on everyone, admit or not. Dealing with the azzes of sociality daily and seeing the unfairness, that our own peers and staff does. Makes you wonder, what did I get myself into. This is and can be a great career, as long as you keep the bar low , sorry humor or at least a attempt.
