^^This is an oft-used reason as to why Orange County doesn't work crashes. However, other SO's manage to work crashes in their areas of responsibility and handle the other calls for sevice that come in as well. In Palm Beach and Broward Counties, PBSO and BSO work nearly all the crashes occurring in unincorporated areas (utilizing Community Service Officers for the grand majority of the crashes) and FHP Troop L Lake Worth and Davie Districts are mostly on the interstates. In Miami-Dade County, Miami-Dade PD which is the defacto Sheriff's Office (and will be an actual Sheriff's Office next year) handles crashes as well. If these agencies didn't handle crashes in the county the gridlock that is infamous in Orange County (waiting 3+ hours for a Trooper) would occur there as well. I've never worked Troops C or G but I believe Hillsborough County and JSO handle crashes as well (hopefully a C or G Trooper can chime in here and confirm this is true or not).

The often-repeated line that Orange County uses about not having the resources to handle crashes in addition to normal law enforcement calls just doesn't hold water when other, similarly-sized agencies with a similar call load manage to do so without a problem.

The truth about Orange County is this: Years ago, then-Sheriff Kevin Beary simply said his Deputies weren't going to work crashes. Period. End of discussion. FHP command staff simply said "Ok, no problem Sheriff" and that's why today you have Troop D-Orlando Troopers going from one parking lot crash to another mailbox crash all day to every day.

Kevin Beary is a genius. He got FHP to serve as his (and his successors in office) Community Service Officers for free.

Wrong. The Sheriff's before Beary, Walt Gallagher and Lawson Lamar, but refused to work crashes.
