Because it was a set up. Because they have all been joking together about race for years, because DD brings it up in a “joking” manner regularly. When is the last time a black coworker joked with you (if you’re white, or otherwise not black) when have you heard, “it’s because I’m black isn’t it” as a JOKE. Think hard about what you said to that person, maybe a person you’ve worked closely with for years. Was it maybe something like “oh yeah, it’s for sure because you’re black”. How does that look on paper? Where you joking? Being sarcastic with someone you know well and are comfortable with? Guess what? It doesn’t matter.
