    Dispatch

What’s it like to work in dispatch? Is it as bad as everyone says?

It's not terrible, but definitely not something one would want to do for a career. The pay is horrible, and there is virtually no overtime to be had anymore. Most days you are getting callers who have no idea where they are but were blind transferred from 911 (who knows exactly where they are but just doesn't feel like telling us), So then you have to spend 20 minutes convincing them to turn their head 90 degrees to find a mile marker. Or having to find out information from a 19-year-old who is crying their eyes out and can't talk. Or having to convince the person that just had a gun pulled on them to NOT chase the suspect. You get blind transferred callers who are in actual emergencies but 911 didn't want to deal with them, so we just gotta wing it and hope we can help them. All the while you also have a trooper in the other ear who is pissed at you because their radio doesn't work, or requesting an ETA for an X70 after 20 minutes, or wants me to call back the person trapped in the overturned vehicle to find out if they are north or south of the intersection. Top that off with the ridiculous office politics and drama that is going on 24/7, it's pretty insufferable.

Overworked, underpaid, lackluster training, poor management, flaky technology, lack of camaraderie.

I guess this would be the case for dispatch AND troopers!

Go to a medium to large city or county agency instead. Most of these issues will be resolved there. You do not need to "start here for telecommunicator certification" as many have said perviously.

If you are a good candidate, most agencies have their own state approved in-house programs and will train you from ground zero.
