Teachers are required to have 4 year degree to educate our children. Why don't we require LEO's to have the same education before we can carry a gun in public and make life altering decisions? If we don't have the aptitude to earn a 4 year degree as a teacher does, what makes us able to make split second life changing decisions in public?

You need to be able to hire non-supervisory people without degrees because they are more likely to STAY in patrol for an entire career (answering calls) and who will STAY in jail (working the floors). People without 4-year degrees are more likely to stay in non-supervisory positions. You need to be able to hire non-degreed people who are willing to do grunt work for an entire career. Requiring a Bachelors degree for entry-level employment creates too many long-term problems.

Teacher w/Bachelors degree
60k salary at the end of 30 years
28k retirement pay

Deputy w/0 college credits

There should be at least some formal education requirement for promotions. Sergeant- minimum two year degree. lieutenant- minimum four year degree. There is really no excuse not to get some education when you can do it through the department at a very easy pace. If there were better educated supervisors they can educate their subordinates better and make the rookies with no life experience better cops.

Agreed. Entry-level hiring should not require a 4-year college degree to answer calls-for-service and/or to work the floor in a jail. However, if someone wants to advance in rank, then require a 2-year degree for sergeant or a 4-year degree for lieutenant (or something like that). However, requiring a 4-year college degree for entry-level employment has proven to be disastrous for departments that have tried it. The vast majority of people are not going to go to college for a 4-year degree to answer alarm calls at 4:00 AM in the morning.
