    4 Year College Degree Requirement

Teachers are required to have 4 year degree to educate our children. Why don't we require LEO's to have the same education before we can carry a gun in public and make life altering decisions? If we don't have the aptitude to earn a 4 year degree as a teacher does, what makes us able to make split second life changing decisions in public?

A four year college degree in Criminal Justice should be mandatory at a minimum.

People don’t want to be cops as it is anyway now especially with this new BS movement. You’ll be lucky if future Leo’s have high school diplomas. You can’t have it both ways. Next you’ll say all Leo’s need body cams but you want to defund them. Can’t have it both ways idiots! Why not suggest doctorate degrees you ignorant moron.

You need to be able to hire non-supervisory people without degrees because they are more likely to STAY in patrol for an entire career (answering calls) and who will STAY in jail (working the floors). People without 4-year degrees are more likely to stay in non-supervisory positions. You need to be able to hire non-degreed people who are willing to do grunt work for an entire career. Requiring a Bachelors degree for entry-level employment creates too many long-term problems.

Here is a conservative retirement-pay comparison between a teacher with a Bachelors degree and a Deputy with 0 college credits:

    Teacher w/Bachelors degree
60k salary at the end of 30 years
    28k retirement pay

    Deputy w/0 college credits
60k salary at the end of 30 years
    45k retirement pay

    That’s the ticket

    Less education for LEO.

Dumb down qualifications and hire the great unwashed masses and see what you get.

    More knuckle dragging apes.

There should be at least some formal education requirement for promotions. Sergeant- minimum two year degree. lieutenant- minimum four year degree. There is really no excuse not to get some education when you can do it through the department at a very easy pace. If there were better educated supervisors they can educate their subordinates better and make the rookies with no life experience better cops.

Agreed. Entry-level hiring should not require a 4-year college degree to answer calls-for-service and/or to work the floor in a jail. However, if someone wants to advance in rank, then require a 2-year degree for sergeant or a 4-year degree for lieutenant (or something like that). However, requiring a 4-year college degree for entry-level employment has proven to be disastrous for departments that have tried it. The vast majority of people are not going to go to college for a 4-year degree to answer alarm calls at 4:00 AM in the morning.

It's all about common sense. There is no need to require applicants to have a PhD to answer alarms at 4:00 AM in the morning. College degrees are good, but it's not a panacea for answering alarms.
