Hello,
I have a question. Me and my son were fishing from a bridge in the keys.

A boat was traveling parallel and close to the bridge at a high rate of speed.

The boat caught my sons line and took our pole.

The boat captain was looking up at the bridge and I waved to get his attention. The boat captain acknowledged me by waving back and held up my bait so I could see he had it.

I went to the end of the bridge and walked down the embankment. The water is deep next to shore here.

The boat comes over and begins yelling at me saying my line was over a navigable channel and I could have seriously hurt him.

The boat then left without returning my equipment.

Who was in the wrong here?

Is there a limit to how much line to can let out while fishing from a bridge?

When fishing from a bridge if enough line is let out and the bait crosses a navigable channel is that a violation of some law?

I want to make sure that when we fish we fish within the law. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
