Once they were questioned about it, they denied the allegations and once were threatened with possible charges they immediately back dated their "vacation time" showing they were off during their times at the academy. They were doing that scam for a very long time....but once they went after someone in their department it something else, that person made it known to the Command Staff. What did they do....NOTHING. Karma.......

— Agreed with recommended discipline for two high-ranking police officials. Capt. Robert Dietrich is facing a one-day suspension, and his wife, Major Karen Dietrich, formerly the head of the Internal Affairs department, is facing a letter of reprimand.

Both were found to have improperly logged time during city work hours when they were being paid by Broward College to teach at the police academy. Officer Carl Hannold lodged the complaint that the two were paid simultaneously by the police department and the police academy. The double-dipping investigation looked at two years of entries into the city computer system. Both “made efforts to document their schedule adjustments” when teaching, city internal investigators found, but they did so improperly.

Robert Dietrich additionally was found to have worked at the academy on 13 occasions when he didn’t attempt to log the time with the city, but he said he did adjust his schedule and worked for the city in the evenings. On two occasions, though, investigators found he worked at the academy during the day, did not log a schedule change, and did not use his police department accrued leave to make up for the fact that he was not at work for the city. Both employees are salaried and don’t have to account for every hour worked, the city report notes.

Union President Tucker said “this was a computer system training issue, plan and simple,” and there was “no evidence of any intentional wrongdoing.”

After careful review of the evidence and testimony in the captioned investigation, I have
determined the charges against Officer Carl Hannold for violation of Fort Lauderdale Police
Department policies 118 E 12 U): "Conduct prejudicial disruptive to the good order of the
Department" and 129 E 4 c (2): "Speech involving themselves or other Department personnel
reflecting behavior that would reasonably be considered reckless or irresponsible" are NOT
SUSTAINED.

In November 2017, Officer Carl Hannold filed a complaint with the Office of Internal Affairs
alleging Major Karen Dietrich and Captain Robert Dietrich received compensation from the City
of Fort Lauderdale while simultaneously receiving compensation from Broward College for
instructing police academy recruits.

On May 1, 2018 Officer Carl Hannold was informed by the
Office of Internal Affairs his complaint of criminal impropriety against Major Dietrich and Captain
Dietrich had no merit, but the investigation did result in administrative charges being sustained.

Officer Hannold openly expressed his disappointment with the outcome of the investigation. The
following day Officer Hannold made a Facebook post on his private account expressing his loss
of faith in local government and alleged it is rife with public corruption.

Officer Hannold's post further proclaimed his intent to "bring the fight to their doorstep." The social media post caused
multiple concerned people to share screenshots of the post and its comments with Chief Rick
Maglione. The timing of the post caused Departmental officials to surmise Officer Hannold was
publically accusing the Fort Lauderdale Police Department of being corrupt based on its
disposition of the complaint involving the Dietrichs. Departmental officials also deemed it
prudent to mitigate the implied threat of violence by issuing Officer Hannold a No Contact Order
prohibiting any interactions with Major Dietrich and Captain Dietrich.

Officer Hannold was subsequently interviewed by the Office of Internal Affairs. He disclosed his
social media post was not referencing the Fort Lauderdale Police Department or its handling of
the complaint against Major Dietrich and Captain Dietrich. He asserted his post was in reference
to an alleged injustice involving another local government concerning a private matter related to
his daughter. However, Officer Hannold refused to provide details to substantiate his
explanation. He also asserted his use of the term "bring the fight to their doorstep" was just
jargon to indicate he would assist his daughter with resolving the private matter and was not a
threat of violence.

testimony, this investigation failed to produce a preponderance of evidence to prove or disprove
the allegations.
