    Defend the police!

    Help us help you!!!

PBA ALERT – Make your voices heard and have your family, friends and all that support our profession, which is under attack, take 5 minutes of their time and call.

On Wednesday, July 8, 2020, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners (BCC) will take up the issue of whether to impose a civilian oversight panel (IRP) on police officers – including municipal police officers if their cities opt in.
The last proposed IRP ordinance passed on first reading, June 16, 2020, and called for funding the IRP with no less than 1% of the MDPD’s operating budget (that would be the equivalent of $7.59 million per year). The PBA has fiercely fought any efforts to defund the police!
IT IS IMPORTANT that you, your family members, friends and neighbors call county commissioners BEFORE the Wednesday, July 8, 2020, meeting (starts at 9:30 A.M.) and let them know that you do not want another taxpayer funded layer of bureaucracy overseeing the police, especially any attempts to defund the police, by any amount, whatsoever.
Below please find the telephone numbers of each Miami-Dade County commissioner:

Alright then if we rest on our our laurels like Steadman nothing will ever get done. I totally get the frustration with Steadman, and the PBA in general, But we can deal With that later. Now, we need to fight.

    Bargaining Unit Members,

As you go into the weekend, I am pleased to advise you that just a few minutes ago, Mayor Carlos Gimenez vetoed the County Commission’s passage of an independent review panel (IRP). As you are aware, we have been fighting the implementation of this additional layer of oversight that ultimately would come at significant cost to the county taxpayers. We contend that while this additional bureaucracy may be appropriate for some jurisdictions, it is not needed in Miami-Dade County due to the incredible work we have all done over the past decade and longer, in bringing the community together through continued dialogue and training. As we all know, there is a massive amount of independent police oversight already existing, and when I say “independent” I am specifically excluding internal oversight within MDPD or Corrections.

We understand that it is more a position for politicians to take to earn their points with certain constituents, and it was not a surprise to us that after having successfully resolved this issue just after I took office as your President, that it would come back up so soon after the tragic events in Minnesota which led to civil unrest nationwide. While you, our first line defenders, protected our community from those very agitators causing the unrest, some tried to take advantage of the moment by once again proposing civilian oversight. We know is not necessary in our county departments, but is currently the politically expedient thing to do.

We have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure that your voices are heard, and in doing so we are extremely confident that we have overcome any efforts some might have to “defund” or in any other way deviate funds from the services that you provide. It is also a great opportunity to make sure that we all support those candidates for the upcoming election who we have fully vetted and screened, and we have endorsed in their particular races.

I want to thank those who made the politically difficult decision to oppose the legislation as presented, and to the Mayor for vetoing it. While those on the County Commission supporting you are enough to prevent the rest from overriding the veto, we believe that another version will be presented for first reading on Tuesday, even though our understanding of the Commission rules would preclude this. Regardless, with the strong push for civilian oversight not going away, there may very well come a time that legislation creating such oversight does pass, but we are comfortable that with the work we have been doing that if and when this occurs, we will have fully protected our members from any fallout stemming from the legislation.

We will remain in the fight to insure that your rights are always protected.

    Steadman Stahl
