    African American Promotions

    Can anyone tell me when the last time an African American was promoted in the patrol or Law Enforcement Division? Now two Privileged pasty white people will be promoted by Kurt Hoffman( more on her and her past drug use later to come). How many supervisors are minorities in the Law Enforcement Division ( not the jail) are there? Think about this and how unbalanced Kurt has made the agency? When is the last time Kurt promoted a minority in a street position? For that matter is there a minority working in the inner circle ? Is this department racist? Do the math.

    • The Sarasota Sheriff's Office has never had a black supervisor in the law enforcement division in the 21st Century.
      .
    • Several decades ago back in the 20th Century, a token black was promoted to corporal (JZ Sipp???), but he was eventually demoted and he was only allowed to work as a desk officer.
      .
    • In the 21st Century, token blacks have been promoted in the jail/courts, but they are not allowed to work the streets in the law enforcement division.
      .
    • We live in a county where blacks either live in Newtown or in Laurel in Central County (the former plantation shacks for slaves). If you want to see some history, take a drive and look at the old plantation and the plantation shacks there surround it. The plantation is southeast of Laurel Road and the trail. You really have to see it to believe it. LOL

    That is a good point. We are a very progressive agency with a black supervisor. :-)

    How many people close to the Sheriff are Black? These are the highest paying jobs ? How many black people are in Kurt’s campaign? Does Kurt plan to bring in an African American to be his number 2? How many African Americans does Kurt plan on promoting to staff level positions? If...he gets elected

    This is the problem with the world today. When did race become a qualifier for a promotion? Isn't it supposed to be the best qualified for the job? So why not ask when the last time a transgender was promoted? Or how about an Asian? A hispanic? A gay? We can go on and on. I don't care about the color of their skin, their sexual preference their age etc. I just want the most qualified to be promoted.

    You are 100% correct ----- and that is why we have "few to no blacks" in the law enforcement division ----- due to "qualification" issues. The law enforcement division has very high standards. That is why blacks have historically only been allowed to work in the jail/courts ------ because the jail/courts have lower standards. The cream rises to the top ----- and the law enforcement division has always had higher standards than the jail/courts. Standards cannot be lowered to accommodate race. That's just the way it is.

    So What you are saying is the average SSO deputy is superior to the average African American working in the Jail or the courts? Should we start breaking down some SSO deputies who do not have college degrees but we’re still hired because they were white? So in your mind the black folk should only work in the jail and the courts?

    Yes, that is pretty much the historical hiring practice, although it can never be publicly acknowledged, nor can it be publicly discussed, but it is evidenced in our hiring practices, from the inception of the agency. It is a dirty little secret that can only be discussed and acknowledged behind closed doors. It will change in the next 10 years. Change is inevitable.

    A convicted felon (what's his name) secretly submitted a proposal to gerrymander the north Sarasota vote, which eliminated blacks as a voting constituency-block. The proposal was accepted by the Sarasota County Commissioners. Then the commission was sued, but the lawsuit was thrown out, with the judge stating that (a) yes, it was gerrymandering (b) but not, it was not done with the intent to eliminate the black vote.
