Why do we name our union after a raciest Police Chief Walter Headley

Headley was known for cracking down on communities of color with policing policies like stop-and-frisk and his use of patrol dogs.

Time to Change our union name. This is insulting!

In 1967, a Miami Herald report on Headley’s comments said “his men have been told that any force, up to and including death, is proper when apprehending a felon.”
Headley, the Miami police chief for 20 years, liked to brag that he was early to hire black police officers, though only white officers were allowed to be called “policemen.” Black officers were called “patrolmen.” By 1967, any semblance of outreach toward minorities became a non-starter for Headley.

If it wasn’t for chief Headly minorities ( Blacks) at the time wouldn’t have been hired. He’s the only one in the city that fought and allowed the policemen to unionize. He later on as chief allowed changes to the contracts that help us all. So because of him lots and lots of you have great benefits and even jobs. Yes during the 40’s 50’s 60’s 70’s and even into the 80’s and 90’s police work was a lot different. Bad guys were treated a lot different and crowd control was done a whole lot different. So before you try to erase history why dont you learn from it.
